  1. I grew up in the North of England and would carve what we called "turnips". These days they are called swedes and turnips are much smaller whitish root vegetables. The other Halloween traditions in the North were apple-bobbing, either from apples held on a string or trying to eat apples bobbing in a bowl of water.
