In the life cycle of civilizations, there has to be many great filters. Obviously, we have succeeded in getting through many already, but I suspect there will be many more to come. I think a great example of an ancient filter we surpassed was the fight for dominance between us (homosapiens) and the neanderthals, who obviously did not make it through. Interesting that there was a time that there were two entirely different species of humans. An example of a more modern filter is making it past potential human created disasters, such as nuclear war. I think the next big one will be getting through the AI singularity, which is coming.
