Right, we can look back in hindsight and laugh today about all the crappy cars from that era, but we must not forget it was a different era, and many of these vehicles at least served their purpose as cheap transportation for the masses. It wasn't all that different for my family. We only had one car when I was really young in the late 70's and it was a big old gas guzzling Buick. My dad drove that to work and if my mom and I needed to get anywhere my grandfather had to drive us. In 1980 we got a Dodge Omni as a 2nd vehicle. It was a crappy little car, but it got us around and it was good on gas.

It's because so many of the teens that were just there to cause trouble ruined it for everyone else that wanted to enjoy it. The mall was always a great hangout for my friends and I when we were young, but there was always that element of delinquents there, fighting, shoplifting, vandalizing, etc. It got so security would start dispersing groups of more than 4 or 5 teens, and yes they took away many of the places to sit. I'm old enough to still remember when our mall had several smoking lounges throughout the concourse.

That's basically what happened in the United States in the 70's and 80's, the downtown shopping areas were all marginalized and many left vacant as everything moved to the suburbs into malls. I still vaguely remember as a very young child in the early 80's going downtown in our small city and shopping with my mom, by the time I was a teen in the early 90's all that was long gone.

There were incidents at some of the malls near me where people were being attacked, mugged, even raped by assailants hiding under parked cars.

If you held a gun to my head and made me buy a modern American CAR (not a truck, SUV, or crossover, an actual car), i don't even know what it would be. Ford makes no cars except Mustang. I love the look and they are fun to drive, but the quality is questionable. Rented a brand new one with less than a thousand miles on it a few years ago and it felt like it was going to shake apart at highway speed. Obviously poor build quality. Chrysler products are complete rubbish. I guess i would reluctantly get some GM product but i don't even know what. I guess if nothing else some of their bigger cars at least ride nicely. Way back i had a 2000 Buick Regal that rode like a cloud, and it did have GM's last truly great engine in the 3800 V6, but i don't even know what they even make any longer in terms of large passenger cars.

Living only a short drive from the Canadian border, we used to go to Canada for fun all the time when we were 19 and 20 and the drinking age in Ontario was 19 and in New York was 21 😜

The dashboard comment made me think of my buddy's old crappy AMC Jeep Cherokee. The thing was held together by duct tape and Bondo, but also the vinyl dash was deteriorating and you could stick your finger through it. He went off the road one time and hit an exit ramp sign and the guy in the passenger seat smacked his head off the dash. It left a giant head sized crater in the dash, and best of all, his head hit where "Jeep" was written in raised lettering and a faint outline of "peeJ" was on his forehead for some time after 😂

What's ironic is that Amazon was just a book order service 25 or so years ago that was a bit of a joke and was predicted to fail when the big dotcom bubble burst in the late 90's. Just like Apple was definitely going under as well. To know then what we know now.

American cars, for the most part, have been pretty bad for quite awhile now. Of course there are exceptions, and to be fair most any car of the 1980's was junk, I had an '85 Civic that was a complete POS, and by today's standards it wasn't even that old as I bought it in 1992 with fairly low mileage. I currently drive a 10 year old Nissan Frontier that has had zero issues in 10 years. I have had better luck in general with Japanese cars, but I did have an Escort back in the day that was really reliable. The only modern Japanese lemon I had was a Mazda RX-8. All the stories about the Wankel engine being trash are true.

The twin to the Chevy Cavalier. Being in high school in the early 90's, tons of people had those cars and their variants. Ford Escorts and Dodge Shadows and Neons were also popular. I had an Escort and it was surprisingly quite reliable. Had many friends with Cavaliers and Sunbirds and they all seemed descent as well. Those with the Dodges and Plymouths didn't fare as well, however. After I finally parted ways with my '91 Escort in 2002 (it still ran like a top but needed more suspension work than the car was worth), I briefly had a hand me down Dodge Shadow for about a year. It was my grandma's old car and had super low mileage. It was a piece of junk, drove like a tractor and broke down constantly 😂

I believe it was effectively replaced by the Camaro. Believe it or not the Corvair was supposed to compete with the Mustang but never really caught on because it was too quirky with the rear engine and all, not to mention the issues with handling and underperforming. I will say though it was an interesting piece of Automotive history, and I did always fancy the different look of the Corvair. It was way before my time that they were mainstream, but I do remember a classmate of mine in the early 90's having one. It was definitely something very unique at that point.

You have to wonder what the designers are smoking when they do stuff like that. It's not even like it saves money to make it inaccessible, like say replacing a metal part with plastic makes the quality suffer but you can understand they did it to cut costs. Something like making an oil filter nearly inaccessible is just downright dumb design. I had an old Honda Civic, and you think "Honda, must be engineered perfectly", but no, I remember being told to be careful to never damage the oil pan because in that car they had to lift out the engine to get at it and it was super expensive. Whether that was true or not I don't know, but that's what I was told.

@olwill1 n 1993 my dad bought our family's first foreign car, a Honda Accord, and that effectively was the end of anyone in my family ever buying an unreliable American car ever again. The only exception was my grandmother's old Buick I inherited, kept as a 2nd vehicle, and drove into the ground, but we have all pretty much just owned Japanese cars and had no problems with them. The European cars were a different story, temperamental and expensive to fix. I never had one but my parents had an Audi and a Volvo and they were nice cars to drive and ride in, but were money pits. My dad was definitely a Honda guy, had a couple Accords and a couple Acuras that were all really good. I myself like Nissans. Have owned a Sentra SE-R, a Rogue (1st gen, not the crappy 2nd gen), a Murano and a Frontier. Had a few Mazdas but all the problems I had with the RX-8 killed me on that brand. It was to date the only bad japanese car I have owned, and I attribute that to the gimmicky Wankel engine.
