  1. Standard of living depends on where you go in the U.S., as well as crime rates and many other factors. Different states and cities are practically like different worlds here in the United States. I love my country and would encourage anyone who wants to come here legally and make a living to give it a try, and I like where I live, cost of living is low and crime is low, but the trade-off is bad weather in the winter, and wages below the national average. Of course if you love your home country and are happy there I have nothing but respect for that as well...and if you are happy there that is all that matters. I have never been to Poland, but I have heard great things about your people and culture. There are lots of Polish-Americans where I live. One thing I know is I love Polish food!

  2. What alot of Europeans don't realize is just how huge and spread out the United States is. I recently just took a business trip to a city just a few states west of me and it took me 8.5 hrs to get there by car, and that is less than a quarter of the way across the entire country. In Europe you guys can go anywhere on a train and it is relatively fast and efficient. We have trains here but they suck, and you are limited in where you can go on them. It is usually just easier to drive. Even flying sucks unless you live in a major city. If you live in a smaller city like the one I live near, you can only fly to a big city to get a connection to elsewhere. So basically what was an 8.5 hour drive would have been about the same on a plane by the time you deal with security, change planes, get your luggage, and get a cab to your hotel, and cost almost 3 times as much. So basically gas HAS to be cheap here if you want to get anywhere in this country that isn't in just a small radius of where you live.

  3. Yeah the suburbs really suck. I hate my acre of land, and the privacy the woods around me provides. I hate the 2,000 square foot home I get for a mortgage payment equivalent to the rent on a studio apartment in the "hip" part of town. I also hate that my car is locked up in my garage and never gets broken into, and I never get parking tickets, and how I never get mugged walking home from the convenience store. It is really terrible. If only those darn automobile companies hadn't bamboozled me. You know, because the only reason I live here is to have a bunch of cars.

  5. It's all what you grow up with and get used to. I am from a rural area, and prefer lots of space and close proximity to nature, at the expense of not having as many cultural/social options a city offers. Where I have chosen to live as an adult is actually perfect for me. I live on the very edge of the population center of a medium sized city. Literally across the street from me is a hay field, and not far beyond that lots of places to golf, ski, hunt, fish, hike, etc. But a mile and a half the other direction is a suburban shopping center, and another 15-20 miles beyond that is the city center. My personal property is about an acre and I am surrounded by woods on 2 out of 3 sides of my house with a street in front of course and open land across from me. But I can hop in my car and drive 30 minutes to go to a sporting event, a show, or anything else I want to do downtown.

  8. I live in what would be considered an "exurb", more or less a suburb of a suburb, and I work in a small village that is a drive away from the population center of my area. It's actually great because I never deal with traffic...as the main flow is going the opposite direction of me.

  9. It's alot safer here in the US than our reputation with foreigners may suggest. Alot of Europeans think it is like the wild west here. My buddy in highschool was from England and he seriously thought everyone carried a pistol on their side here and people shot each other all the time. The reality is the VAST majority of shootings are in really, really bad areas of certain cities with crime problems, that no normal person would ever go in..it is mostly drug criminals and gang criminals shooting each other. Not that's okay that kind of stuff even exists, but it is easily avoided. Not to say random stuff doesn't happen, but it is much less frequent than you think. You have to remember, guns aren't cheap. A petty thief that goes around mugging people is probably going to do it with a knife or blunt object, or maybe just sucker punch you. They don't have guns. They just don't. That is just crap you see in movies. More law abiding citizens have guns than random muggers. I do. I have about a dozen guns.

  10. Just reading the comments here shows how different city people and country people really are. It's no wonder politics have always been so divided between them as well (for the most part). To use American terminology, it's not even "red state" vs "blue state", it's urban vs rural. I live in a more rural area of a "blue state" and my district is very "red". Same can be said about some urban districts in "red states" being very "blue", like for example Austin Texas.
