I don't think selfishness is a unique quality to humans, I mean yes I have yet to meet another intelligent life form from another planet so this is just speculation, but I would assume all intelligent life goes through a stage of what I would actually call tribalism rather than selfishness. We are still very much in that stage now regardless of how enlightened we think we are. The next logical step would be unity as a species if you were to ever get to a level where you started colonizing the stars because it would take collective intelligence and resources to accomplish it. If there are more advanced civilizations out there they must have reached this level, however they were most likely much like us at one point in their history because tribalism and looking after yourself and your own group is animal instinct that gets you beyond the early stages of development.

What would be interesting to ponder of we ever did discover some sort of extragalactic empire would be if it still exists now, because we would see it as it was millions of years ago, or more, depending on how distant the galaxy is from us.
