  3. In accounting you have the "rule of 9's". If, on a ledger sheet, your reconciliation is off by a multiple of 9, it almost always means a number for transposed. This is because if you take the inverse of a two digit number and subtract it from itself, it always ends up a multiple of 9. For example 71-17 = 54 85-58 = 27 42 - 24 = 18 All multiples of nine. So next time you find your checkbook is off by $54, look no further than the rule of 9s, and most likely you transposed a number somewhere.
