I live just outside of Buffalo. Say what you will about it, it isn't the most glamourous city, and we get a lot of snow, but it really is, statistically speaking, not a city riddled with violent crime, and for the most part pretty safe and people are mostly descent around here. Yes, every city has it's crime and it's sections you stay away from, and we are no exception, but this kind of thing just doesn't happen here. It's a shame it took an outsider to come in here and commit this heinous act. But this just goes to show you that anything can happen anywhere, no matter how safe you think your community is, all it takes is one bad individual passing through, or in this case oddly enough targeting this specific area. Yes, it is well understood it was racially motivated, but strange he didn't go to a much closer area like Syracuse or Binghamton or Elmira, which all have large minority communities as well. I think we may find out some interesting developments as time goes on here in terms of motives and why this specific location was chosen.

@BuffaloKelly711 For sure. You are from here so you get it, but people from other places are always very surprised when I tell them there really aren't many racial issues around here. Sure, you get your isolated incidents, but overall there is really kind of an old school blue collar mentality around here where everyone kind of just pitches in and helps each other out and nobody cares who or what you are. I think we may find out there were at least others involved indirectly as influencers, if not outright accomplices. Too far to go out of your way for something totally random. And this 18 year old kid will sing like a canary under interrogation.

Easier said than done in NY. My home certainly is armed to the teeth, but getting a carry permit in this state is no easy task.

It's sad that such a young person would do such a thing. While he of course deserves the maximum punishment, and none of us yet know anything about his background or family, you have to wonder what they are like and how they are feeling. It could be another Tim McVeigh situation. Family was completely descent and normal and he just got radicalized by outsiders. Saw the footage of him at his arraignment. You expect to see some monster, but what you saw was some nice looking young man that could have been your neighbor. That makes it even more scary. Just who got a hold of this kid. What a shame for his family. I feel no sorrow for him, he made his choice, but I think about how I could have a son his age and I couldn't imagine being his father.

In this particular case it wouldn't have made much difference as he was fully clad in kevlar, and an armed guard actually did engage him, but his shots did not penetrate the armour and he was killed. That said, I'm do agree that in most other situations of this type, having civilians nearby that are armed can certainly at least lessen the damage if not prevent it entirely.

If you have any semblance of an IQ, you know this, and you know that saying the concept must be proven is asinine, and furthermore, that YOU demand such proof be given to you or else you magically win the argument is nothing but a giant red herring. Can I have some of what you are smoking? Besides, isn't the biggest threat climate change? I mean, poor Al Gore's coastal mansion must be under at least 50 feet of water by now. Maybe he grew gills so he can stay there. And maybe he could burn 50,000 gallons of fossil fuels in his private jet to fly around and tell us about it, and tell us to stop using fossil fuels.
