I finally got my vehicle with sunroof and premium leather seats last year at age 47. After driving average at best vehicles for years. Now I can actually afford it because I saved for 25 years instead of blowing it all. Also have about 50% equity in a home that has more than doubled in value since I bought it in 2010. Young people now have it hard enough with the ridiculous real estate market, let alone blowing all their money and running up debt with rates in the high teens and twenties for interest.

That's almost double my mortgage and I have a 2,000 square foot home with an acre and an outbuilding. Built in 1992 so not new but not super old. Picked it up in 2012 for $190K and is worth over $400K now. Wouldn't want to have to buy something now. People that want to are screwed.

$37/ month family membership at the town run community fitness center where I live! Is it state of the art? Hell no. But they got what you need and even a pool if fancy a swim.

Sounds like me at that age. Two of us split a $335/mo apartment with appliances and fixtures from the Silent movie era (for real), got free heat from steam radiators (which was extremely unreliable but free), and pirated cable and internet because we had a buddy that worked for the cable company that hooked us up. We watched that cable on an old TV that they were throwing away at the college we went to prior. I was 24 and drove a 12 year old car I had since high school and my roommate was 22 and rode the bus to work. All of our furniture was hand me down stuff. Our "coffee table" was an overturned plastic storage crate with a board on it. The stove was from probably the 1930's or 40's and had to be lit with a match. We complained at the time but we had fun, and now I look back with fond memories of that time.

I hear you. I myself rented a prewar apartment (pre World War I 😂) 2 bedroom with a roommate for $335 total a month in 2001, $167.50 a piece! It was a complete dump but looking back now it was a fun time in life. Had low rent, free steam radiator heat, and an old car and banked lots of money at a young age, so I could afford a decent house just a few years later.

I don't think school has taught that stuff since my mom was in school and she graduated in 1962. I graduated high school in 1994 and we never learned that stuff. I was just fortunate enough to come from a long line of frugal people. Not cheap, but frugal. And there is a difference. Being cheap means continually only buying inferior or worn out items to save money, even if you have the money for something better. Being frugal means not wasting money on trivial items and saving for higher quality important things like a dependable vehicle and furnishings that will last. My grandfather was the King of frugality. He would stretch the items in his pantry further than I have ever seen, could fix anything, lived in a small house his whole life that him and his father built in 1950, but it was immaculate, and always drove a nice car, granted a total grandpa car like a Buick Regal or an Olds Delta 98, but nevertheless always something plush and nice and newer.

Flying can be cheap if you are willing to spend the time hunting down the best deals, and are willing to book well in advance on a budget carrier. Not that I do it often, but it is doable.

@WilliamMorey-Baker So it's smart to borrow/run credit at 16-17% and invest at less than 10%? Who'd a thunk it 😂😂😂

@WilliamMorey-Baker I have a Master's degree in economics and manage a small financial firm. I think I know what I am talking about. I don't get my financial advice from infomercials, as it appears you do.

I can confirm this. I do taxes and have a good number of clients that make $300-400K or more a year and have to go on payment plans to pay a $5,000 tax bill. Where is your money going? Both my wife and I combined don't make half that and could pay a $5,000 tax bill like 10 times over just out of cash savings. It's all about managing your money properly. I have one guy that perpetually withdraws from his 401(k) every year to pay his tax liability and eats both the tax and thr penalty in the process. I told him to quit doing it, he is only screwing himself, but he has done it like 5 years running and I don't think he is going to stop anytime soon despite my advice.

@Diffusionuuu Do you also live in that Corvette 😂

It pretty much is normal, unfortunately. I live in a fairly low cost of living area and rents for 1 bedrooms are around that here unless you live in the ghetto.

Cheap : Buying inferior products, or buying used worn out products, both of which will need replacement sooner than something more expensive and higher quality and end up costing more in thr long run. Frugal : Saving up and buying better things to begin with, taking care of those things, learning how to fix them and only replacing them if absolutely necessary. Also stretching everything as far as humanly possible, from a tube of toothpaste to food in your pantry and leftovers. Be frugal, don't be cheap. A prime example : I bought a $2500 Cub Cadet lawn tractor 12 years ago and maintain and service it myself and it is still like new. A friend of mine has opted for the $999 Lowe's special MTD yard machines garbage and has burned through 3 of them in the same time period. I have $500 more in my pocket, and a better machine.

@trevagraham1605 Home repairs are the worst, but at the same time I feel fortunate to actually own a home because it's so expensive to buy one today. My wife and I save every year and put it in an account for unexpected and overdue expenses. We do only as many as necessary and are affordable out of our fund, and pay in cash as many independent contractors will give you a deal if you pay cash. Of that's because they don't report it on their taxes, I know all about that as a tax accountant, but I don't care if I am not the one doing their taxes!
