This. And that's when your taxes go up. That's the thing. Yeah it's great you have more equity, but if you sell you have to buy something else that is overpriced, you can't live in a cardboard box. I'd rather my house not skyrocket in value because my taxes have also skyrocketed.

$100K if someone just handed it to you, on top of what you already have, could do a lot. $100K as an annual family income is about the bare minimum of what you need to live even halfway decently. And by the way, I'm not saying this as some rich out of touch person, my family income is under $100K.

For real. A good friend of mine makes about $400K a year and is in debt and has almost no savings. Of course buying a Lamborghini, which was broken and he had to eat the cost, then going out and buying another Lamborghini, and having a giant house built for him and his wife and zero kids was pretty stupid.
