My family had a '91 Volvo 240 Estate, in white. As it looked like a refrigerator on wheels, we nicknamed it "the Fridge" π

They were still kicking around until around 2010 or so they became very niche. You could still get many popular sedans in wagon form prior to this. My parents were always big wagon people. They had a Volvo 240 Estate, a Mazda 6 wagon (actually fairly rare), and an Audi A4 Avant. Not much to choose from now. You can still get a Volvo wagon, and I believe a Volkswagen Jetta (Bora in Europe) in a wagon, I think that's it. I don't think you can get an Audi wagon anymore.

Take care of it and you will get a million out of it. Rock solid vehicles.

"Nobody cares about your watch" I love it. And I'll tell you what, I like the cheapo Casio Illuminators, of course in the super bright red and blue 1980's styling and I get tons of compliments on them. Back when I was younger and wanted to look like a hot shot wearing expensive watches, nobody cared π

When I was in college, I used to crash in my Escort hatchback. Just folded down the back seat and there was just enough room to sleep diagonally in back. It helped that I am only 5'9".

My friend had one of them when we were in high school in the early 90's. It was great. It was even a manual transmission. We used to all pile in that thing. No third row seats but we piled in the back anyways π

βΒ @OrxbaneΒ The problem is we aren't given much of a choice anymore. My family never owned a minivan, we really didn't need one as it was just my parents and me, but my dad always was a fan of the European style. We had a Volvo 240 Estate when I was in high school, and later when I was older my parents had a Mazda 6 Wagon (it was actually really cool and quite rare, it was the grand touring model with all the sport packaging), and an Audi A4 Avant. After dad passed, my mom wanted to trade in the Audi for a new one and the Avant at that point was so hard to find and so expensive she unfortunately ended up getting a Subaru Crosstrek. It's not a terrible vehicle, but it's so boring typical American little crossover box.

My family never had one. We had an Oldsmobile, and later a Volvo 240 Estate wagon. Somehow, I think that is actually less cool than a minivan π€£

My family had a white 240 Estate that we called "the Fridge".

The town I grew up in was probably like 75% Swedish American. Having a Volvo or a Saab was a way of life. We had two Volvos, a 240 Estate, and a 960 sedan. The 240 was bare bones, but it was a tank. The 960 was such a nice car. Fully loaded and every bit as nice as a 3-series or a C-class in my opinion.

You have to have power to open the doors? I can't even believe that's a legal design. That's a deathtrap.

Back in the 80's, if your mom wasn't dropping you off in a Dodge Caravan/Plymouth Voyager with faux wood paneled sides, you weren't cool. At the time, my parents had an Oldsmobile. So uncool. A total grandpa car and they were way younger than I am now, then. In fact, my actual grandpa drove a similar Olds in a different color at the time...of course dad only had the Delta 88, and gramps splurged for the Delta 98 π

I'm pretty sure you can still get a VW Jetta (Bora) wagon here in the U.S. It's one of the last wagons around, sadly.

I drive a small pickup and make my coffee at home π

When I moved out of my college apartment way back in old days of 1998, I borrowed my parents '91 Volvo 240 Estate, and I literally packed everything I owned in that thing and had room to spare!

To be fair you could say the same about 99.9% of the other ultra wealthy elite.

Remember the good old days when literally every sedan on the market came as an optional wagon? Not just the behemoth estate wagons, no you could get a Ford Escort wagon, a Chevy Cavalier wagon, a Toyota Corolla wagon, anything your heart desired outside of the really small subcompacts, but even a few of them came as wagons. Pepperidge Farm remembers!

Ever drive an older Volvo wagon? My parents had one when I was in highschool/college and I used to drive it. It was a '91 240. It was an absolute tank. Yes, it handled like a tank but it would also drive through a brick wall without scratching it π

I'm old enough to remember that brief period of time in the mid 80's when minivans were actually cool. And that was a real thing. Minivans were modern, anyone driving an old full size van was considered a dinosaur. But full size vans did still have a purpose as cargo haulers and commercial people movers. But sadly the minivan did successfully kill off the station wagon. Personally, as a kid I always preferred riding backwards in the third row of the old giant station wagons of the era, it was fun π

βΒ @thomashenderson3326Β I will mostly agree with you, with the exception of Toyota Highlander and Honda Pilot. They are both very practical vehicles and very well made. That's about it though for larger stuff. The rest are complete trash. I was literally rear ended stopped at a light in my mom's little Subaru by some idiot that hit me at about 40mph in a Suburban. It crumpled the back end of the Subaru a bit, it rung my bell a little, but I was fine and the car was repaired like new. The Suburban, on the other hand, was completely demolished. The entire front end was destroyed including the engine. I don't know what happened with it but I would suspect it was a total loss.
