@JesseNilsson05 Let's just call it what it is, it's irresponsible. Of course nobody wants to put people in danger with their actions, but being irresponsible is not thinking about consequences. It isn't really all that different from driving drunk. The drunk doesn't intend to hit someone, but they are irresponsible by driving impaired and if they do hit someone they are liable criminally.

Highways through rural Montana have an "unofficial" speed limit of 100. In other words, the posted limit is what it is, but they won't pull anyone over going less than 100.

I believe in some jurisdictions in the United States if you exceed double the speed limit it is a misdemeanor and automatic suspension of your license.

"Tax fast cars more to prevent speeding". How very European. We know you love your taxes over there. However in reality any vehicle capable of ridiculous speeds is going to be expensive, therefore already is taxed extra in America, with a luxury tax, which can be pretty hefty. Now I'm not talking some rat rod that you build that goes really fast, but any supercar level vehicle is already highly taxed. Anyone who can afford a car that costs more than a house really isn't going to be deterred by higher taxes.

93 mph

@Strutsiina Both kph and km/h are acceptable abbreviations.

Police absolutely have speed enforcement in the United States, are you kidding me? That's where the majority of their revenue comes from. They just give people a bit of a buffer. Most departments will set their radar/laser to only detect speeds 12-13 mph over the limit on highways. They aren't going to waste their time pulling someone over for 67 in a 65mph zone. But if you're doing 80, you're going to get slapped pretty hard with a hefty fine. And inevitably your auto insurance will skyrocket in price.

That's a pretty dumb concept. So what if you are unemployed and flat broke speeding in a friends car you borrowed? Do you get no fine because any percentage of $0 is $0???

Very true, however people of every income level drive like maniacs. Going back to my days in school (a long time ago but still relevant to today 😂) sure the rich kids had Dad's Porsche or BMW to fly around in, but the poor kids all built rat rods and drove just as badly, and additionally, in very unsafe vehicles that were often jerry rigged and held together with duct tape and Bondo.

I had a 73 HP 1980's Honda that couldn't go fast even if I wanted it to. Maybe if you gave it a couple miles of a downhill grade 😂

Technically, speeding isn't a crime, it's a violation. It can be raised to a crime (misdemeanor) if other factors are at play, such as recklessnes, substance use (drugs and/or alcohol), fleeing a crime scene, refusal to pull over for police, etc

@SimonVaIe Firstly, not every state has capital punishment laws. Secondly, it is only sentenced for first degree (pre meditated) murder. Thirdly, most people don't have a problem with it. Oddly enough, the ones that find it the most problematic, think it's okay to have an abortion at 9 months when the fetus is a completely viable functioning human, and are okay with essentially tearing it out and exterminating it by draconian means. But you know, that's fine but the lunatic who shot 30 people in a school and was in camera and caught dead to rights should have "rights".
