  1. We have been way behind in automotive progression on many fronts. U.S. market cars still mostly had carburators and throttle bodies until well into the 80's, and 3-speed non-overdrive automatic transmissions well into the 90's. Heck, GM was still using the 2-speed "power glide" transmission well into the 1970's when 3 speed and even overdrive systems had existed already for two decades. We also didn't make the centre brake light mandatory until the late 80's.
