@dakotadurham4788 thats because joining the military during peacetime is one of the few advanced and relatively reliable career options for people who live poor or rural, whereas job options and travel is already more available to people who live around areas in the north. war-time is of course entirely different, as cities have way more people to levy. i guess it just goes to show that the union was ultimately successful. for the most part.

It's almost like brutal oppression, ransacking and stealing of resources can cripple a region.

I understand why people fought in lines during the age of muskets, but its still absolutely horrifying. at least with shields and swords there is a degree of skill and strength, and if you get wounded you'd likely survive even despite subpar medical knowledge of the time. meanwhile in the age of muskets its all about luck, and even shrapnel from one of the leadballs could kill you.

@Norwagen Norway's government: "Stop harboring norweigan and danish rebels" sweden: "no"

"saw germany almost win" what.

@glennmandigo6069 If we ignore all the indirect deaths caused by military coups and destabilisation by allied nations, sure. Let's ignore bengal famines and the destruction of Latin America by the US, which directly contributed to the rise of communism in those areas. Also, the gross exaggeration of kills by American forces went beyond what's typical in war.
12
@glennmandigo6069 all sides ignored casualties, and thats without mentioning how americans grossly exaggerated their killcounts.

"okay, so... the soviet union is over. but that doesnt mean we cant still be friends." Every formerly soviet country: "man, this EU and NATO thing sounds kinda cool. lets join that instead".

@mr.monhon5179 when Call of duty gamers become generals, thats when you get something like the vietnam war.
7
@carso1500 they didnt create the terrorist organizations and insane religious leaders, they just armed them, protected them and killed anyone who opposed them.... which is basically the same thing as creating. no, the US is the bad guy in all of this.
5
it wasnt just a local culture thing. The government that was propped up was horribly corrupt, so even partaking in democracy wasnt really an option. same thing happened in vietnam.
5
@glennmandigo6069 it was their own country, and the attempt to divide the nation by the west was little more than a band-aid on the corruption of the saigon government.
4
@Spacemongerr also because norway's government actually crumbled from the inside and submitted to the nazis, whereas the polish were in open rebellion. Sweden had several quislings in its own government, and it was perhaps for the best not to give them reason to try to turn sweden into another axis ally.
3
The German pows should thank their lucky stars that that they werent all rounded up and shot dead quite frankly. The amount of soviet pows the nazis killed dwarfed the comparatively pathetic number of German pows who lost their lives, and that's without mentioning the civilian death toll. It's hard to feel sympathy for an army that was committing genocide across an entire country.
3
Norway fell to nazis in its government, Denmark crumpled within hours, Finland was being invaded by the soviet Union, Axis and communists on its borders, nazis and communists in its government, France was split down the middle, both parts being fascist, UK was busy fucking around in africa and the US didn't commit until 42. and still people keep wondering why sweden was Neutral.

@HofEE52 still. at least you're hiding in a trench or in a building. you can be perceptive, potentially see the drone before it sees you and run for cover. in modern war your objective is to survive long enough to be useful, using whatever means in your arsenal exists.
2
@vinz4066 i'd rather sit in a bunker thats being shelled than stand in front of grapeshot.
2
@brydonthunder turtle tanks are marginally better at surviving drones from above, the problem is that drones can fly in from the side. also, the fact that it makes the tank completely useless as there is zero visibility and mobility for the turret. its cope gone too far where it actively impedes battlefield efficiency.
2
you cannot win a guerilla war against a determined population.
1
@trevid7158 "the nationalism the germans sold them was more appealing" you are several rungs of stupid if you genuinely think most frenchies were happy to be forced to be subserviant to germany.
1
@shoeofobama6091 usually its two walls of steel facing off against one another, and you're just a part of it. not saying it wouldnt be bloody or brutal, but at least there are ways to survive.
1
@newonthewatcher2023 of course they can blame the western colonial powers.. the damage done by colonialism goes extremely deep. If the mongols had conquered france and HRE, and force the populations of those countries to go to Britain, we would have war and strife going on to this day. like, 90% of the conflicts in the middle-east are literally born out of british haphazard borders.
1
nah, nukes are the worst addition, because it means that countries like russia doesnt have to worry about being counterstriked.
