  2. a big problem with "is this socialism or not" questions regarding, be it the soviet union or china or cambodia or vietnam or whatever, is that you basically have to ask several smaller questions as well. -Does it adhere to socialistic beliefs and philosophies? -are the people running it genuine socialists? -Is it still socialism even if it has no socialistic elements because intent<results? Is it still communism if the state still reigns supreme permanently, even though the state is supposed to be temporary in a communist system? its like a christian sect still being considered christian even if it rejects jesus and the new testament. I also think its important to highlight how little changes when a country goes from fascism/imperialism to communism. ultimately it feels like a somewhat reductionist dichotomy, "capitalism or/vs socialism".

  3. that is true, but you have to remember that china is its own country on the other side of the world, with its own eco-system of products and content. its own internet, its own film studios, its own everything. its a proverbial bubble. and in this bubble american fast food resturants still reign.
