@Gary-bz1rf No, no you cannot. The EU ensures that there is, generally, a certain bar a country and by extension its people need to pass in order to be able to travel, trade and work freely across the various countries of the EU. The only way you could have such a system without the EU is if you implement all the systems that the EU has, which would still leave you with, shock and gasp, the EU.

@Gary-bz1rf yes, a century long agreement between ireland and northern ireland (and b extension, most of the UK), both of which are on the same island and shares most things, both political, culturally, ethnically and linguistically. thats helluva lot different from trying to have such a system between the UK and the EU.

yeah, concerns like: being able to live and work somewhere outside of britain freely.

its ironic. a russian oligarch tries to brand media with even a fraction of foreign funding as "foreign spies".

@jockjockin9589 the problem with russian "patriotism" is that it is of the insecure variety. A patriotic german pays his taxes and if he finds a wallet on the street, he hands it to local authorities. A patriotic russian steals his neighbour's car and moves to finland.

@@Conservatism Because the most plausibly effective version of that system is already employed by the EU. no, there will never be a "like the EU" without checks and balances, rules and regulations, because no one in their right mind would agree to it.

@silveriver9 Russia wont launch the nukes just because they fail to exert influence over foreign countries. they'd be dooming themselves.

Hungary (as well as poland) take more money than they give, and refuse to leave the EU whilst their populist politicians spout anti EU rhetoric. they want to have their cake and eat it too, and because the EU is too limpwristed they actually wind up succeeding.
