I have read other studies that have found the most economical and environmentally friendly means of transportation is a well-maintained bus. After you consider the costs of track maintenance and the energy consumed by vehicles that perform track maintenance, buses are much less expensive and energy-consuming. I recently took a trip from Philadelphia to Washington D.C. and the cost by bus for the trip was $100. less than Amtrak. The bus and trains left from the same stations, and the bus trip was only 30 minutes longer. The bus was not as comfortable and roomy as Amtrak, but it was more comfortable and roomy than my last airplane trip. In my opinion, the future of transit belongs to dedicated bus lanes on highways that link major cities. Run buses rather than trains. The schedules and routes can be more flexible than rail.
