  1. It wasn't really the" fate of western europe"; it was going to end the war quicker either way; there was no way for Germany to have a strategic victory from this battle. The Germans were running out of men and materials, this simply hastened that end. In fact, many in the German government and military favored the allies moving into Germany quicker, because the alternative was to fall the Soviet Union.
