@simonchallenor1006 the difference in EVs is stark though with a 300 mile range going down to 60 miles in some cases. Worse, the recharge time is significant making pulling any sort of trailer impractical with an EV

@Concorde-AXDN They've already stopped making them; in fact it appears GM and Ford have both largely dropped EVs in favor of more of the vehicles the American market wants.

@simonchallenor1006 You have to look at debt versus cashflow. Toyota revenues continue to rise 10% a year, which is amazing in what is a mature market. Toyota can easily manage that debt, and as they shift to a significant investment in hybrids, what you're going to see is that Toyota will sell more hybrid cars than all EV sales combined.

@kiae-nirodiariesencore4270 " In 2022 the oil, gas and coal industries received $7 trillion in subsidies globally." Can you list those subsidies? Or is this something you just read someplace without attribution. Lithium mining is really bad for the environment. So much so that I it would be better if we stopped doing it. It's bad for the water supply, it does terrible things to the environment where it's often strip mined, and most of that damage happens to poor, 3rd world countries.

@williammeek4078 Not in the US. They've plateaued. Ford and GM have effectively shut down EV production. These are first gen products still and will be until they get rid of the problematic lithium batteries.

@williammeek4078 Well, they are abandoning it. GM and Ford have "paused" EV manufacturing. To put it in PC terms, this is equivalent of 1971 for personal computers. The time horizon that seems likely for wholesale change to EV is probably 30 years away after they've solve the significant problems with this generation. If you like your EV, nobody is stopping you from enjoying it. And there's nothing that's been written here that most people would find even a little controversial.

@donmab "Electric Viking" It sounds like a brand of high-end stove

@kiae-nirodiariesencore4270 Tesla is making money. You can never tell with Chinese companies if they're making money or not. Volvo actually is pulling back from the EV market. Their polestar cars are nice, but they have really terrible range, and they're too expensive. There's been a lot of press about it; surely you've read about it.

@derekr1113 What an odd thing to say.

@kiae-nirodiariesencore4270 flywheel overruns? Dude, you're tripping b**

@kiae-nirodiariesencore4270 If you have oil all over your car, sounds like something's broken.

Well, obviously some people are getting value from these first generation products. It would be nice to see it mature and evolve to eliminate lithium batteries entirely, significantly better range and much more sophistication. What we can see right now with the level of maturity that they're not a replacement for gas/diesel cars & trucks, nor should they be positioned as a replacement. Certainly they won't save the planet (not that it needs saving in the least). Like any new (and revolutionary) product it has it's fanatics and detractors. But you can see this will take a long time to sort out, given the complexity of the battery problem. And it's very possible EVs will disappear if something new and better comes out. There's a lot of investment going on in this area, so anybody who claims that one technology has won obviously doesn't remember the PC/Mac wars of the late 80's & early 90's.
