Let's talk facts here instead of new-age nonsense: 1) make the grid stronger No one in the world is doing this, because the costs are too high 2) creating jobs and opportunities 10 years ago, Spain moved to a "green economy" and it completely tanked their economy with high unemployment 3) transition to clean energy there's no such thing The creation of EVs actually is far worse for the environment than the full lifecycle cost of a gas/diesel car. In addition the full lifecycle of windmills and solar cells is worse for the environment because there is no way to recycle them, so they end up as waste and buried where the chemicals leach into groundwater. Steve, come back to earth. The air and climate are just fine.

@kathrynwhitby9799 Of course. Wood is plentiful, it can carry heavy loads without breaking, and with some maintenance will last 100's of years.

@redbaron6805 Well, those were optimistic projections from 3 years ago, but as predicted, EV sales have leveled off and will never achieve more than 5-6% of the total population of cars, and those are primarily used as 2nd cars for people with garages.

But things are only recycled if recycling is cheaper than mining new minerals. Aluminum and steel fall into that category, but lithium and sodium require special handling (i.e. expensive) that makes them uneconomical to recover. Cobolt falls into that same category with new cost-effective methods for recycling still in the lab, which means we're probably 15-20 years from production use.

@redbaron6805 Yes, and EVs have that special feature where water doesn't stop them from running, they just run a tad hot.... like 5,000 degrees hot.

@jeffsaxton716 They don't. Every gas station has a standby generator to keep the pumps working. At least in the US.

While that's true, it's the way EVs can keep you warm without using up their precious battery charge

@DemiGod.. Yes, but often as the batteries age, and road debris and minor accidents compromise the structure of the battery they are no longer water tight. It's why insurance companies routinely write off EV with minor damage because the risk of a compromised battery isn't worth the liability to the inrance company.

@geirvinje2556 Well, that makes sense though. The world depends on oil. In fact without oil, we'd be running civilization like the 1850's, with all of us using whale oil lamps, and huddling around fireplaces for warmth. The reality is ships, transport (long distance and local), heating houses, trains, farm equipment, can cars, largely depends on oil. So keeping oil cheap is the key to keeping the cost of all goods and services down.

@geirvinje2556 Well, virtual every gas station has a backup diesel generator, which works well, since they can use the diesel in their own tanks to stay open for significant periods of time. You must live in the boondocks if gas stations can't survive without the grid.

@gppsoftware exactly. In Montreal about 25 years ago, a huge ice storm downed many of the electrical towers and they were without electricity for 6 weeks. And if you think they're better prepared today, then you'd be mistaken.

@tigertaylor1327 The generator that virtually every filling station in the US has. The only time you can't get gasoline is when something like a flood or tornado destroys a gas station.

@williampisano7573 Of course they need power, but they can get it from their generator when the grid fails. It also supports the refrigerators inside the building so you can still get cold drinks and food.

@bryanhood9839 You get pulls from a junkyard. These type of engine swaps happen all the time and generally for far less than $5K. Same happens for transmissions. The only time you get a "new" engine is if it fails under warranty and the manufacturer will ship a new engine to the dealer to replace.

@redbaron6805 It happens all the time. Welcome to the real world. You can look up engines online from junkyards. These salvage yards don't stay in business long if they sell bad engines, so there is quality control. You're welcome for me teaching you. And you do have a lot to learn about reality.

@mac_mcleod It's actually 22-30%. And EVs have a special kill switch. It's not about the power. Tesla or any EV maker can simply turn make your car inoperable.

@BTC.maximalist Gas powered cars lose about 15% of their range for short trips, so your typical car that gets about 400 miles of range may only get around 350 miles of range worst case. While that's unfortunate, remember gas cars don't get less mileage when you turn on the heater.

@gerbre1 That remains unproven. Recent studies have not shown the CO2 is not the cause of the natural warming trend taking place.

@redbaron6805 There was never any "Ozone scare" Of course there was. They wanted to ban all aerosol cans because of the propellant, they told us it would take 50 years to close the "hole in the ozone layer" and then 2-3 years afterwards they declared the scare over. The whole thing was B.S.

@Wee_Langside Wood has many advantages over stone construction and have been a proven building material because of the unique characteristics of wood. Scandanavia uses wood as does the US because it works quite well.

@Wee_Langside Actually there's a germ of truth, but not exactly. Our house has concrete board siding, which is obviously fire resistant. And roof shingles are fire resistant as well. And of course on the inside of wood houses is plaster board (a.k.a. Drywall) which is non-flammable. So it's nothing like Tokyo in WW2. Tokyo was bamboo and paper construction.

@Wee_Langside One more point, wood is actually a much better material to withstand earthquakes, which are common in several parts of the country. A stone or block house would be ruined and collapse. LA falls into that category.

@retroonhisbikes That's what the Biden administration did for both "expanding EV chargers" (they spent billions and only have less than 10 online). That's what they also did with "connecting people to the internet". They spend $40B and connected.... you guessed it... nobody. That's what politicians do.

@redbaron6805 They are easily damaged by stones kicking up and minor accidents where there is even a slight dent in the battery makes the car scrap. And no one is recycling batteries. The juice ain't worth the squeeze.

@aaronwalderslade A brand new EV is probably safe in a few inches of water, but once it's 3-5 years old, that would be the end of the car

@angryrabbitproductions1690 Untrue. I won't say any gas cars have a remote kill switch, but congress recently debated it and found that for gasoline/diesel cars the technology does not yet exist to do that safely.

@Catsrules1 Again, let me repeat that no gasoline or diesel car made in the US currently has a kill switch. Neither the software nor the hardware exists in existing cars because of cyber and safety issue.

From an EV perspective, LA drivers will be in trouble. California has mandated EVs and with the grid in a precarious state, people will be walking in LA (Like the old song goes).
