@fmsanc People get confused because they seem to get more upset they pay $200/month for gas then they do paying $600 a month car payments for an EV. I can't tell you how many times I hear people say silly stuff like I can't afford to pay for gas, so I'm buying an EV for $35K and I'm getting a 72 month loan for it And when you work the math for them, they get stuck on ... but I'm paying for gas now, this will save me in the long run... and you realize most people are economically illiterate.

An EV is the politicians way to send us a message that this is the age of diminished expectations.

@fmsanc That's after you've had to spend thousands replacing the gear box, exhaust system and possible a new engine Most people never experience that. It's so extraordinary when an engine fails that you tend to remember it. In fact most cars go 15-20 years with nothing more than routine maintenance.

@typhoon320i So you live in a salt/rust belt if you're seeing all these problems. Guess what... EVs will have similar problems in salt/rust belt, and worse, since EV makers struggle to get replacement parts which is why insurance companies routinely write off EVs for only minor impact damage. Consumer Reports has pointed out that from a reliability standpoint, EVs are not terribly reliable, being only slightly more reliable than Dodge Ram. Ironically the hybrids produced by Toyota (Lexus/Toyota) have the best reliability of any car and cars from Honda/Subaru/Mazda are all significantly better than any electric car. So you may be a mechanic (certainly not an A tech), but you don't understand what makes cars reliable.

@typhoon320i The so-called simplicity of EVs has not led to better reliability, and that battery hanging on that thin piece of metal underneath is a terrible design, as a single stone can render the entire car worthless if it compromises the battery. Also keep in mind that the only people who can fix these cars when they break is Tesla, since virtually every part on their cars are serialized meaning that the equivalent of the ECU needs to be programmed to take almost any repair part. Why does the consumer care? Take a look at the VW ID.4; when motors failed the cars sat for months because only the factory could program the VIN into the tool. If you're a mechanic, look in your scanner to see if it can program the ECU for any electric car. If the answer is no, then it's a terrible idea to buy one. If you can't buy parts from 3rd parties, it's a terrible idea to buy a car like that.

@typhoon320i I actually got rear ended in mine, and the structural bumper had to be replaced. ECU didn't need to be reprogramed at all Well no sh*t that a piece of metal didn't need to be reprogrammed. Did you believe it would need to be reprogrammed? Does your bumper plug into the ECU? But the point still holds, does your scan tool support Tesla or any electric car? Where would you go to get a new traction motor? If you need a new battery, where is the 3rd party battery source to compete with Tesla? I don't care that you like your electric car. But trying to claim it's better than a Honda Civic is so easily shown to be false not just because of range, cold weather performance, reliability, but because I can go to any shop in the world and get my Civic fixed.

I would buy a 1 year old Model 3 for $10K

@thefreestylefrEaK You may not be able to if the values continue to drop.
