@starpawsy Lithium is a dead end, as is sodium. Maybe long extension cords are the answer.

@user-ee9cz6mc1x Yes, everyone who disagrees with you is being paid by someone else to oppose you. They're probably waiting in a car outside your flat waiting to engage you in an argument as soon as you leave for work.

@davidvanderklauw The only "market" that the government created was for EVs.
5
@starpawsy Awesome. They can use those legendary chinese nuclear batteries.

@maifantasia3650 Those of us representing the Kerosene lobby need equal time. They used kerosene in the Stanley Steamers (which were very green) and it's a fuel we need to get back to if we're going to solve the climate.
2
@jamesvandamme7786 We conjure it, much like how we conjure climate crisis.
2
They still make mighty fine gas powered cars. They'll do fine.
2
@mmeek4078 Not much of a climate crisis

How can people save the planet if they don't have EVs? For every mile you drive in an EV, a tree starts to grow in the desert.

A poll on twitter recently found that most people believe the Climate Cult might be the biggest cult in the world today.

@j17golf well, it's one models out of 100's of models Toyota makes and sells around the globe. And that doesn't include Daihatsu and Hino. Most of their electrification is in hybrid models, which today make more sense for people who want some form of electrification without most of the downsides of full EV.
1
@j17golf Third world countries use very up-to-date telecommunications tech. Apparently you've not traveled very much. They tend to be very practical and don't have the luxury beliefs that left-handed people have in rich countries. But they avoid EVs because they're a toy. And in many of these countries, the cost of propane is so cheap that it would be foolish not to use; and as a bonus propane burns cleanly and is less polluting than an EV.
1
@j17golf Well, they own Hino. But EVs will not be really viable until 2040, and by that time, nobody has a clue what will happen. I suspect people will come to their senses long before then.

@psilocybemusashi No hardship is to great to save the planet, I say. In fact, if EV owners really wanted to save the planet, they get rid of the battery in the floor, and use their feet to propel the car like that cartoon "The Flintstones". While that sounds like a joke, that's exactly what "net zero" means.
1
@j17golf Only if you define "far more viable" as "fussier, less range, higher cost, and not actually helping the environment" If we agree on that definition, then yes, they're more viable.
1
@j17golf You have no idea what "exponentially" means. In any case, in the US EV sales have plateaued, even Tesla is struggling these days.
1
@7golf Actually normal car sales are up about 5% this year, and that's already with a 14:1 ration of cars to battery powered cars already. And you do realize that Elon Musk just said on Twitter the other day that Tesla is struggling, Rivian may fail because they're having severe cash flow issues. Promise some day that you won't claim it all fell apart because of some sort of plot by oil companies. That would be so jejune.

@williammeek4078 Understand California heavily regulate insurance companies. From CBS News: From 2020 to 2021, auto insurance losses spiked 25% while premiums increased by only 4.5%, according to the American Property Casualty Insurance Association. The rate and severity of auto accidents are up as well as the costs to cover them So with that data in hand, they asked the insurance commission to allow them to raise rates. The commission refused. Insurers cannot refuse to cover Californians as we are what's called a "take all market," meaning that even if you have a crappy accident record they have to take you. So California has earned everything coming to them by making it unprofitable to operate in California.

@j17golf Lol. Why all the drama? The mining of lithium is one of the most destructive processes of mining every metal, and it wastes millions of gallons of fresh water. They need huge diesel trucks to carry the ore, huge diesel engines to run the water pumps, and then little children get involved. We don't know if they smell or not. The making the batteries is highly hazardous and releases potent toxins into the environment, and the making of the cars themselves releases paint fumes, it involves more diesel trucks to bring the parts in from other factories, and finally the painting releases toxic fumes into the environment. Finally when the batteries burst into flames it produces even more toxins so hazardous and dangerous that you need specially trained firemen and equipment to inhibit the spread, because it can't be put out. These EVs are an environmental disaster on 4 wheels.

@williammeek4078 No, Billy. Florida has always has had bad hurricanes. Take a look at a list of Hurricanes that have a significant effect on Florida. For the past 100 years, they've always happened. The irony is Hurricanes for 30 years have actually slowed down in number as well as ferocity around the Gulf area. The difference is that states like New York, California, Michigan & Illinois are so poorly run that taxes are spiking, and regulations are spiking driving people to Texas and Florida. Which mean that while the number of deadly weather events are decreasing around the Gulf the number of people has increased significantly raising the overall risk profile of the area. Florida isn't losing insurance companies, the rates are going up not because of severity of storms, but the impact of any storm on the area.
1
@actualfacts1055 Yes, but you can put them out with a common fire extinguisher. Can you explain to the class how you put out a lithium battery fire?

@derekdrummond7544 Seems pretty hard to believe, unless oil companies employed hit-squads to kill people when they leave their company. I've heard people say thing like "big oil buys up all the patents for alternative fuel vehicles", not really understanding that patents don't afford secrecy; all patents are publicly searchable.

@doubleooh7337 It's so effectively I just read an article the other day that said the oceans are about to freeze in just a few years. Due to global warming... or something like that. No joke. I believe in the science man. After all climate change... Gretel Thunderbird... scientific consensus. They can't all be wrong, can they?
