@williammeek4078 Quite the reverse. A gasoline fire burns at 800 C, and will certainly burn itself up if given a chance. Fortunately if you have a fire extinguisher with you, it can be extinguished. By contrast, an EV fire burns at 3800 C and will melt steel that is too close to the car. And there is no practical way to extinguish it.

@williammeek4078 Unlikely A used model 3 at this point is worth about $12K. Primarily because it's a fairly stripped down car, terrible interior ergonomics, has a huge liability since you have no idea if the battery was treated correctly by the former owner(s).

@badchefi so first, you must realize that $20,000 US is about $31,000 NZ. Second, gas is $3 US a gallon but in New Zealand, a gallon of gas is the equivalent of about $11.50 US, and at that price a Honda Civic will use about $950 US a year or about $11,500 NZ a year. So over 20 years, gas will cost about $18,000 US or $218,500 NZ because of your government gas taxes (this assumes an average driving of 11,000 US miles per year) The cost of a new model 3 Tesla in NZ is $66,900 NZ or $43,000 US So in the US when you run the numbers against a Civic, the Tesla 3 makes no sense economically, and there's no way that Tesla 3 will make it to 20 years.

@oldbloke204 Floods and power outages will mean that you can't access fuel and roads will be just as impassable whatever vehicle that you have Most filling stations in the US have generators, and we have lots of Jeeps and similar vehicles (not to mention farm equipment). That's how we recover from storms, gas or diesel generators, 4x4's, chainsaws (2 stroke gas powered), and then after the cleanup takes place, and the power comes back on, then you can charge your EV.

I would love to get a Ford Bronco (one of the new ones) with a 4cyl diesel and a manual transmission and a big fuel tank, but alas, Ford is really making it for urban cowboys.

@gerbre1 The battery in any EV isn't enough to power even a fraction of my home, and certainly not more than a few hours.

@thetriumphsprint I keep a similar arrangement for my house. It can't power everything, but I can have AC, lights, security system, the whole lot running for up to two weeks.

Well, one things for sure, if you drive your EV through water, there's no need for your heat-pump heater to keep you warm. You'll be toasty before you know it.

@xraylife Based on some of the comments from the EV Fanatics, it appears they've never experienced life outside of a bubble. Even if you don't fit the snorkel to a Jeep, you can usually traverse 2-3 feet of water with no issue.

@stuartburns8657 They actually are able to pump fuel since anything more than a mom-and-pop has a large generator to not just run the pumps and lights, but most gas stations are mini-markets so it keeps the freezers going as well.

@Paul-li9hq Yeah, I generally keep about 15 gallons around for snow removal or lawn mowing, and worst case it goes into one of the cars.

@solentbum hydrolock. It's a thing. That's why you take a vehicle meant for fording streams into those types of conditions (i.e. a Jeep or Landcruiser with a snorkel)

@c6h5choh-cn82 and the reason the US Navy uses lead acid batteries instead of lithium is Lead-acid batteries have a lower cost per unit of energy. This is due to the lower cost of materials used in lead-acid batteries. Adding to the cost of lithium-ion batteries is that they require protection circuitry for safety and to prevent overcharge and overdischarge. Lithium-ion batteries have a poor tolerance to overdischarging and overcharging.

@i6power30 Rivian's ground clearance is a hair under 15 inches. Still getting your battery that close to the water is asking for trouble, since fording a stream often may take you down further than you can predict.
