@sullivanrachael This is already happening. It's why they're trying to shut down the Dutch farmers who are the most efficient on earth.

@suecharnock9369 In the US it's been the government that's been paying the bill to develop them, build the battery plants and paying manufacturers the equivalent of a hidden $50K subsidy on every EV.

@johanncover1988 Well, but it's also the lithium mining and the fact batteries degrade over time. So you're never getting ahead of the capital and maintenance costs associated with an EV. If you trade your car every 3 years, you probably don't care, but in reality, the depreciation affects the viability of new cars.

@johanncover1988 I will own my own power plant They may choose to tax on you on it. They may raise taxes on your car and house until you can't afford it. This is already happening in some states in the US.

@leisuresuitlaz1710 Even stalwart and desirable German cars like the 911 tend to drop in value pretty quick, particularly if you drive them more than 5K miles a year. You might see a 50% drop in price after 3 years, unless it's one of the high-end Porsches.

@deezeed2817 using lithium isn't sustainable either. By your reckoning, nothing is sustainable. Everything is finite on the earth.

Hybrids introduce even more complexity that is the bane of longevity in a car. I'll say it over and over again .... in the US the cost of gas (petrol) is only the 3rd largest cost of ownership (about $1000/driver in the US), so the minimal gas savings won't make up for the initial outlay unless you own the car for 9-10 years. And unless it's a Japanese car, the hybrid part will probably break in the meantime.

@markseehawer3762 That's absolutely true. And the problem with an EV fire is it can't be put out.
