@mechanic2121 Really? Can you name the tax breaks oil companies get that are "far more" than the EV industry? Keep in mind that the actual subsidies to the EV industry are enormous to the manufactures; one study in the US showed that each EV sold has been subsidized by $55K (US) a year. That's more than a really nice sedan costs in the US.

If we wanted to be greener wouldn't we want more CO2 in the atmosphere? After all, the more the plants and trees grow, the more CO2 they sequester.

If it was really better, you'd buy it without government subsidies. Perfect example is cell phones. Even though they're far more expensive than land lines, people buy cell phones for $1K a pop, pay $150 a month to use them, and the.... get this... they continue to pay $1K a pop every 3 years to get the latest ones. Because they're demonstrably better in every way.

@thehairygolfer He's repeating talking points. Mostly rubbish.

@lordgarion514 but governments [taxpayers] around the world have been spending billions of dollars No, taxpayers haven't been spending, it's mandates on car companies that the consumers have been forced to support, not taxpayers (although there is overlap). Government produces nothing of value by themselves.

@davidparker7920 Most of it isn't "nonsense", it's just that your use case is different than other people. If all you do is go to the market; maybe an occasional afternoon drive to the country with your EV, they make a lot of sense. For others not so much. And it's not that EVs are bad, new technology is always interesting, but it's not for everybody, and certainly what's been produced to date is all first generation stuff with a lot of compromises versus petrol/diesel cars. Surely it will get better and cheaper. And that's the point that it will be worth buying. But not today.

@GrandChessboard Reagan said it would "trickle down" one day... Electricity isn't going up because of deregulation, it's going up because government regulations that they must use "renewable" energy even if it's more expensive.

we have the wrong kinds of people in government, and as we're the voters, we're at fault. Put business men and women in charge of government, and we'd have far more rational policy.

@mechanic2121 So you can't name a single tax break the oil companies get that any other industry doesn't get, but you're sure I'm a paid by Exxon. Do you always just talk in slogans?

If we're going to save the earth, accept the fact that you'll have nothing and be happy, whether you like it or not.

@mechanic2121 Freedom is pretty clear... being able to say or print whatever you want, being able to go wherever you want, and mostly being free from government interference in your daily life.
2
@mechanic2121 The guy who has an EV that the government can shut down with a command. That's a pretty easy question to answer.

@davidparker7920 Ah, another person who doesn't understand the difference between anecdote and data. And believe their own needs define the needs of most drivers. Bless your heart.

@davidparker7920 EV sales have almost flatlined in the US, and they're far below predictions, which is why GM and Ford have pulled back from EVs almost entirely. Teslas continue to sell, but one EV maker won't make much of a dent. I said 3 years ago, this generation of EVs will never get above 7% of the total cars on the road within the next 10 years because of inherent problems with charging in cities, a lack of financial incentives for private industry to build chargers, and the inability to charge to 100% quickly (3-5 minutes) without damaging the overly expensive part of an EV. The net-net of this is that we likely won't get rid of gas and oil for the bulk of our transport needs for at least another 30-70 years

@thehairygolfer Ah, now you've convinced me. Clearly I'm dealing with a PhD in persuasion.

@hanswallner2188 _EVs are already pretty perfect _ Lol. That's funny.

@hanswallner2188 "likelyhood of an EV fire is depending on country between 10 to 60 times lower then ICE car," Which is true, but there's two things to note. Gas cars generally only catch fire as they older and are poorly maintained. But a household fire extinguisher can be used very effectively on this type of fire. Almost all of these fires can be attributed to the fuel system leaking onto the exhaust manifold. Lithium fires burn at roughly 5.5 times as much heat (3800 C) which is enough to melt steel. They produce their own oxygen, and there's no practical way to put one out. Some lithium fires have started simply because of poor manufacturing, and others as slight damage occurs (as when you run over a deep pothole). So while your facts are correct in the X axis (likelihood of fire), you missed the Y axis which would measure the impact of the fire

@davidparker7920 Actually, this is what Ford and GM are saying. You'll notice GM's advertising now talks about affordable cars, and they've minimized any talk of EVs. The EV revolution will be delayed by 20 years.

@bobstirling6885 the only way that can be done is if you lease cars, and then it's simply an business expense. The depreciation is built into the lease. This is not a "write off", and it's not a tax credit. It's the same type of expense that you'd have if you leased office space. Even at that, buying an EV doesn't provide you with a better business expense than regular car. What he's saying is that government subsidies made the car financially interesting enough to make his friend try an EV.

@paulparoma health concerns were used by the greenies to justify getting rid of natural gas/propane, because, well.... we're going green. Even the typically logical Germans are irrational, shutting down nuclear plants and then firing up coal plants to make up the difference.

@MikeJones-mz5ig Keep in mind, the US Government also told us, due to studies, that eating eggs is bad for you because it causes heart disease. It took them 30 years to admit they were completely wrong.
