@tr1892 But primarily because the US army was not a fighting force at that time. The troops had little more than rifles, and the soldiers spent their days in athletic contests. And most of the generals had no idea what they were doing. FDR had a dilemma in that if he sent that army to France or Italy, they would have been chewed up very quickly by a very experience Wehrmacht. North Africa was the crucible that produced the American fighting machine that swept across Europe.
