  8. State taxes... depends on the state Federal taxes... treated as regular income except for a tiny sliver. Its a way of reducing benefits while congress says it's not doing any such thing.

  14. There are ladder-type strategies where you take out money during good years and invest it in a 5 year note (or similar) paying interest. The point is to try to even out your cash flow in good and bad years with the market. You can learn about them online, but I wouldn't trust anyone in comments on YouTube to give you pointers.
