@hansolo6827 Exactly right. One of the joys of a sports car is that it has enough power to make those easy passes on the highway, and in traffic that let you point and squirt into holes between cars. If you have to sit in the right lane going the speed limit because your engine just makes noise over 65 MPH, what's the point?

He's a great presenter, no doubt. But his conclusions on cars is....interesting.

@hansolo6827 Exactly. Ford was selling Focus ST's for $25K with a turbo and great handling. The car just needs 250 HP and it would be fine. And the cheapest way to get that level of power would be a turbo.

You realize the whole UX is probably outsourced to the lowest bidder, which means there is no time for iterative testing. A bunch of college grads build it, pronounce it "cool", and then the adults have to live with a lump of cr...coal.

@kwillee93 How old was he and was this his first job out of school?

@bukkuk5949 The Grand Tour is really kind of awful. It's hard to get through a single episode.

As I recall, the Opel GT's were cool little cars, but fierce rusters. In their day, people said the "GT" stood for "Got Troubles".

Toyota didn't sell that many because you can't find a dealer with one on the lot. Most of those have to be Subarus. It's a fine car, but it feels like the red-headed stepchild for both car companies. And the ford Focus ST had a Turbo and a $25K price tag (before discounts). So that completely undercuts your argument that turbo engines will raise the price to stratospheric levels. The Miata with every single option with the electric hardtop is $36K, not $40. The base model Miata is around $26K. Also, the latest Miata (I don't own one, BTW), has a racing pedigree; there's actually a racing series for the car. The car has a ton of handling and go-fast options. The knock against the Miata isn't that it's for "old men", a lot of people just don't want a convertible, which is fine, but the chassis is killer and the price is actually in the same class as the BRZ/8

I drove the original Taurus SHO, and that Yamaha engine pulled like a steam engine, but the car was a little large for my taste. Great car though. And yes, I have to admit, it had the mini-van aura about it because it was an typical sedan kids hauler.

The death of the gas engine is greatly exaggerated. Which makes this guy pretty much a go-along-with-what-you-read guy instead of thinking through why the "death" is about 20-30 years in the future. Note the 210 mile range on the dash. And the fact that it's as ugly as a Yugo. As to the drag race, the real mustang can do those times all day. The faux mustang is out of battery after 4 or 5 pulls. It's everything wrong about the new Ford.

"assy and playful at the rear" C'mon man. This is a family channel

What really sealed the deal with the public was the 2000GT's starring role in the Bond film "You Only Live Twice" with unique convertible model (made for the movie). Astute marketing by Toyota. I remember seeing it in the movie and wanted one. One of the prettiest cars of the day. The closest car to the look today is the Miata RF (Folding Roof verision).

The LFA is not the most attractive car. But then, I'm not a fan of Lexus, so I may be biased.

30 years of progress? Honda is no longer a performance brand. It's a bread-and-butter sedan & SUV company.

Aside from being more satisfying to drive, cars with manual transmissions tend to last longer because the first major part that breaks in most cars is the automatic transmission, and usually at the stage in life where the car is pretty much not worth the cost of replacing the transmission. And before you say "...but the clutch...", I've been driving manual transmission cars for decades, and I've never worn out a clutch driving on the street.

The GTI is a good car, but it's torque curve is not my favorite. There's virtually nothing below 2,500, which makes no sense for a car like that. That said, with the loss of the Focus ST to enthusiasts, it's probably in a unique class at the moment.
