Aside from being more satisfying to drive, cars with manual transmissions tend to last longer because the first major part that breaks in most cars is the automatic transmission, and usually at the stage in life where the car is pretty much not worth the cost of replacing the transmission. And before you say "...but the clutch...", I've been driving manual transmission cars for decades, and I've never worn out a clutch driving on the street.
