  2. It's surprising people keep making the payments to the vendor of the extended warranty after they refuse to fix it. Seriously, if you want to buy an extended warranty, ONLY buy one from the manufacturer. They're cheaper, they're more comprehensive, and the dealer takes care of it. Dealerships, ironically don't like carrying the manufacturer's extended warranty because there's not much margin in them. In that case there are dealerships that sell them online. And they generally sell them 30% or more off MSRP. I have experience with Chrysler and Honda extended warranties, and yes, generally they don't pay for themselves, but they make the car a lot easier to sell privately, since you can get them for up to six years, and the warranty transfers to the new owner.

  3. That seems to be a tacit agreement that LG has a problem and they're in panic mode. They'll spend more money dealing with lawsuits rather than it would cost to just fix the problem. (and a youtuber has taken failed compressor apart; it's a cheap single part inside the compressor). Plus the loss of trust. Korean manufacturers enjoyed a stellar reputation for appliances. Until now.

You should be uncomfortable saying people can't have an opinion on engineering matters simply because they don't have a license. Because in this case, he wasn't operating as a PE, he was offering an opinion based on his schooling and experience.

  11.  @Grizabeebles  It's not a straw man. If you listen to a retired doctor about taking an aspirin, and you don't give him your complete medical history, that's your issue, not the retired doctor. How, for example, would you know he's really a doctor? And if if you're a hemophiliac and you made it to adulthood with no knowledge of how aspirin is a bad idea, then.... that seems like a you problem. Similarly, if a mechanical engineer who is not certified by the government (a.k.a. the state board) offers an opinion in public on a bridge or skyscraper, and someone changes the design based on a guy's statement, then are you trying to blame the engineer? Or the guy who listened to him? There is an element of personal responsibility here that you're forgetting. Free speech rights are fairly absolute in the United States.

So a guy in a machine shop who learns about their new fabricating machines couldn't be considered critical and thus cannot be held to a non-compete. The positions that can be held to a non-compete are people usually with a "C" in front of their title... CEO, CIO, CFO, CTO. But a journeyman lathe operator could not be held to a non-compete

  25. It's Hawaii; anything that can happen in court will happen. Betcha a cup of Starbucks (the expensive ones, not just the coffee) that they (the investors) likely knew what they were doing, but they were already into it (maybe pre-selling the house to someone). And so they're believe by suing the owner they'll make her sell the property cheaply. If something like this happened, there may be people going to jail.

  34. You can always choose not to buy a BMW. They stopped being the ultimately driving machine 20 years ago (notice they don't use that slogan any more). I wonder what would happen if you just wire around the limiter (or flash the car) to make it available? Could BMW sue you? Steve, the real issue here is even with a one-time payment, the manufacturer can charge the next owner of the car to buy the same feature again. Tesla does that for used cars today (even if sold privately), although they don't like to talk about it.

I've done hot-air balloons, yes they are potentially hazardous, there's no way to to predict where they'll land, whether they'll run into power lines on the way down, or if they tip over when they land (meaning you and the rest of the people will end up in a pile). The good companies have chase trucks and lots of people to help. But once you're in the air and they shut off the propane blowers, it's amazing. Highly recommended at least once in your life.

  36. First of all, a 2024 would still have a factory warranty. Second of all it's not her car, and unless they could prove she broke it maliciously. Third, even if the 2024 was out of warranty, the dealer generally has a 30 day warranty anyway. It's on either the dealer or manufacturer. It's weird that dealers want some papers signed to take the car home. I've done that in the past and they just did it by taking a copy of my license. In fact, when I go out for a test drive, I tell the salesman to not come along and generally they don't have a problem with that.

  38. The trick is to only leave a deposit, don't sign a purchase order. That said, the idea that the automaker will treat you better than a dealer or charge you less is not backed up by anything.

It's not to protect you either financially or legally. That's why dealerships have insurance. It's the same as if you loan a car to a friend and he crashes it. Your insurance covers it, not your friends.

  40.  @jamesbizs  I'm not sure what to tell you. Online, I hear people tell me a dealer would never do that, but actually they do that all the time. I went into a mazda dealer a few months ago just to try out an MX-5, they got the car out, started it up, and told me to enjoy myself. When we bought our minivan several years ago, the local Honda dealer said "take it home overnight, see how it fits in your garage and it will give you some time to think over if you really want the car" Maybe we just look trustworthy.
