  1. I finally watched the first episode of season three. For a hero of the show, Michael Burnham cries at the drop of a hat. Everything makes her cry. She lands on the planet she meant to land on. She cries. She runs into a guy with a space ship, she cries. She purposely strands herself on the planet, and then she cries. All of this in the first five minutes of the show. Is that one of the courses they have to take at star fleet academy?

  6. When you care more about the story than the owners of the story, it's time to let it go and enjoy movies 4-6 and 1-3. You can safely ignore anything else.

  7. The really interesting part is his illness which makes you wonder if he's imagining things or they're real. It adds a whole different layer of "interesting" to the show. It's really very good. I thought it was better than the Jack Reacher Amazon show, although I liked both.

  13.  @_ripVanWinkle_  Well, the financial consequences are making it clear the fans aren't buying into the woke/trans agenda at Disney. It's independent of what The Drinker says. Unless you believe "The Drinker" is so powerful he can move financial markets and affect peoples choices of entertainment in a measurable way. So the bottom line is "The Drinker" can say what he wants, the customers have made a decision that Disney movies aren't very good these days.

  17.  @Kpimpmaster  Why "message" at all? Does it add to the enjoyment of the film in a way that generates more revenue? And I will say that it's impossible to "message" the whole trans ideology that will not negatively affect your bottom line. There's too many negatives associated with it, like it or not.

  18.  @ewjiml  He's not un-empathetic at all. They bring him in when the stakes are high and he has to break a few things to get the job done. And what the hell is a "Womanizer" anyway? That describes all guys on any dating app. When people use that term it sounds like they came straight out of Victorian Novel, and people are getting "the vapors" because a man was "committing adultery in an unrepentant way"

  20.  4Freedom4All  So Bond is fictional. If you want a real spy, they're very boring, and the real guys who "clean up" at 3-letter agencies are probably pretty boring too. Bond is bond. If you don't like it, don't watch it. The producers had any balls, they'd have Bond sleep with a lesbian and she'd announce she was giving up girls for Bond.

LOTR works because the mythology was created first and the stories came from that. It's why the Amazon version of Middle earth was a disaster, even though they invested $1B in it.

  25. I asked someone a few years ago why they took the words of an actor more seriously than their neighbor, and I got a vague "they've seen things that we haven't". And they got very uncomfortable and they quickly left (A win-win)

  28.  @Kpimpmaster  In the end though, the beast turned out to be truly handsome and rich. Beauty and the beast is perfect example of Disney before they decided old fairy tales needed to be updated "for a modern audience". Today, they'd insist that Mrs Potts was a lesbian and chip was a trans person.

I only knew about Doctor Who because when I worked at an IBM facility, a woman who was into Sci Fi TV had recorded every episode and loaned me about two boxes of VHS tapes and I watched them all. While the special effects were ridiculously bad, it was engaging, and thoughtful. And I was hooked.

  31. I've had a list of books to finish.... classics... for a couple decades. I've been catching up with them as audiobooks, and the stories are compelling, and these classics are nuanced and have really interesting observations and lessons.

With a new generation, you're the product, and the people in power are doing their best to show you that the way you think and the way you live is wrong. If they were a private businesses, they'd be gone quickly, but your taxes are propping up their brand of social justice.

  38. I think you're right, but if you look at that movie as a metaphor of what happens to a man as he ages, the whole thing makes sense, not necessarily as deconstruction of Westerns (which are cartoons, after all), but a deconstruction of his own career.

  40. Critical Drinker, I think what happens is that it's a very powerful thing when an adult loses his temper or has an outburst, and it has an immediate effect on the audience. So writers are not subtle and they sit around and say "Spock is really angry, and so if he has an outburst as a Vulcan, it's REALLY powerful". So they make Spock act completely out of character and they high-five each other thinking "Wow, this will be an AWESOME moment when Spock loses his s***!". It's like getting a sugar high, it's cheap, quick and doesn't require any setup. So they do it over and over again in the same movie so it actually has no effect on the audience.

  43.  @WaltherPPK007  Well, except that Hollywood and the government actually were infiltrated with people who admired Joseph Stalin and who thought communism was a great idea. It is said at the time of the invention of the Atomic Bomb that Stalin knew about developments faster than Roosevelt. So although actors and the press like to claim this was a witch hunt, it was an issue, which is why it persisted for so long.

  47. So the deal is that the only thing stopping disney from doubling down on the woke B.S. in the movies is because the stock prices are tanking. If the stock price goes back up, they'll be back in the panderverse faster than you can spell Kathleen Kennedy.

  50. Multiple ruined cash cows... Star Wars, Indiana Jones, The Marvel universe. In fact, she's probably cost Disney many billions of dollars in her reign of terror. She's also proved "Girl Power" is no substitute for competence.
