It's not for "no reason"; there are a handful of college degrees that are worth pursuing as a career, and we all know what they are. If you're going to college simply to get a degree, you'd be better off going to a trade school. That's not an admission of defeat or that you're not smart enough; it's a reality that things like being an engineer, computer scientist or CPA are worthwhile. And of course, being a state school, the idea of "cutting back" and "simplifying" aren't in their vocabulary. So they raise tuition and demand more from the taxpayer to fund something that has no customers, no constituency and no purpose.

@davidcohen7106 They can hang the pride flag back up when all the kids are all on grade level for math and english. Until then, focus on education.

@JohnS-il1dr Student loans with no pre-qualifying on grades, college boards and major allowed colleges to raise tuition & room/board without pushback from students because the kids weren't worried about the overall cost. The way you solve this is to make universities co-signers on student loans.

@maryeverett2266 Only certain college degrees. Things like MBA's, College Science, software engineering, Mechanical & Chemical engineering, and CPAs tend to skew the average high. But look at the median wage of people earning sociology and psychology degrees. They're working as baristas.

@mevans4953 A degree is a good idea as long as you get a degree in something that's in demand. But do it in the cheapest way possible, Associate Degree at a local CC and then finish your degree at a commuter 4-year school. If you have to take out a loan and it's not a tier-1 school, then pay your way as you go.

@brankobelfranin8815 Student needs to get the wool out of their heads and stop dreaming that any college degree is worthwhile. Years ago, parents would ask one question before paying for college: what kind of job will you get when you graduate, and can you support yourself on the pay from it?

@brankobelfranin8815 To answer your question, yes, I have told my children degrees are a mistake. That's what parents are supposed to do: guide 17 year-olds away from making bad choices When they graduated, they all said "we really appreciate that we have no debt because it makes getting set up on our own a lot easier".

@brankobelfranin8815 Education doesn't mean "college degree". It also means "journeyman machinist", "master electrician", "HVAC specialist", "nuclear technician", "field service engineer", "industrial electrician" etc. I will say that yes, college is worthwhile for mechanical engineering, chemical engineering, nuclear engineer, software engineer, computer scientist, mathematician, statistician, actuary. And you can throw in MBA too. But if you're going to school to get a degree in English lit or "communications" or "sociology", save your money and go to the library.

@brankobelfranin8815 When people say Money doesn't bring happiness , they're lying. If you choose a profession that doesn't pay a lot of money, don't complain as you get older than life isn't fair. Your success in life is the sum of the choices you make. But I was sincere in hoping for great success for your son. I want everyone to do well.
