  1. Looks are not superficial; they are an indicator of overall health and whether children will be healthy. Similarly, resources (i.e. salary/wealth) are an indicator of how easy or hard your life will be. They seem only superficial if you think of dating as trying to find a "true love". In fact, dating is essentially an extended job interview to see if the other person will be a successful long-term at having children and providing for the children long enough to become successful adults.

You don't marry people with bad family health histories, people who are overweight, or who are currently suffering from a non-accident disabilities because those traits generally leader to shorter lives, and in many cases they arise from genetic abnormalities, which means your children may suffer the same problems. And when people say "Money isn't everything", while that is true, having money makes life easier, gives your children advantages over other children and allows you to retire earlier, and generally leaders to longer lifespans for you and your spouse.
