@r.j.macready No rich nation gives taxpayer college to any citizen who wants it. The countries who provide "free" education have rigorous entrance exams that disqualifiy 70% of the population. In these countries they also move people who are not academically gifted to trade schools where they learn more manual, but highly desirable skills.

@timreyes2179 The US government is forgiving corporate loans? When did this happen?

That's a good point you're making, but you have to admit, that because there is pressure on schools to show that certain minorities are now testing the same as everyone else that the entire curriculum has been watered down so much high schools is useless. Think of Baltimore where literally no one can do math or read at their grade level, yet no one is failing.

@Ender7j Let's be more accurate; specific degrees increase the chance of success for the student as a responsible adult, but not all degrees are equal, and some only have a marginal impact on success, assuming they graduate at all. The fallacy of lowering standards to ensure you have a "diverse" student population is that the graduation rate of these people is lower than fully qualified student and as a result the diversity admission will often drop out before graduation with 1-2 years of college debt and no appreciable skills to speak of.

If the government was closing down businesses due to COVID they took on the responsibility of making that business whole. It's not like the businesses volunteered to shut down. Particularly when the impact was uneven. Big box stores were allowed to remain open, small retailers were not.

@jerrycooper2306 Depends on the degree.

They were clear with their terms and conditions of what the costs will be. If you signed up, and then signed up for a loan, isn't the onus on you to make a rational decision? You could have gone to a local community college and then completed a four year degree at a state university for 1/3 to 1/2 the cost. But if you made the choice to go away to the school of your choice and you signed the paperwork, be an adult now and bear the responsibility of your decision.

@TuhljinTampergauge Dave is a guy with a huge student loan, he's got a degree that qualifies him to be some who....ahem.... works in a retail food outlet, and can't figure out how he's going to pay things back.
