With 2 millions EVs on the road as of 2022, 4125 caught fire last year which is 0.2% of all EV Statistically, EVs catch fire roughly twice as often as a gasoline car.

The issue is one of cost. EV's are already heavily subsidized and yet cost significantly more than than a gasoline car of the same size. The battery is by far the most expensive and heavy part of an EV, so anything to save weight and cost will be considered.

And it's also just as likely that batteries will never get to where they need to be in terms of energy density to make them anything more than a niche. One thing is for sure. Government does a terrible job of picking winners and losers, and I wish they'd stop trying.

@ryanthompson3737 Lithium batteries cannot be doubled in capacity. I'm sorry that you don't understand this. It's why Li batteries are not the future, they are both the boon and bane of first generation EVs. Lithium at best have 1/10th the energy of gasoline for a given weight. There won't be a 2nd generation of EVs until someone comes up with a cheaper material that significantly improves battery capacity.

@ryanthompson3737 Maybe so, but large-scale production is years away at earliest. Because now the EV companies are facing the reality that their battery plants that they just spent billions creating are now last generation tech. Which will push out adoption until existing battery plants are fully depreciated.
