  3. Homelessness in the US is primarily a product of drug addiction and mental illness. It stays around because an entire business has sprung up around the homeless, which benefits politicians especially. Many of these schemes involve buying local properties and then spending 100's of millions to renovate properties and then put these people into them, which quickly fails. So then they spend more money.
