@Alexadria205 "Ronald Reagan semi-privatized universities" No he didn't. He made sure the people who sent to college actually wanted to be there by no longer making college complete the responsibility of the taxpayer, but rather have the student pay 20%. There is nothing free in the world. Be honest and say "paid by the taxpayer". And not every college degree is a benefit to the economy. Most are not.

@aalvarez305 Absolutely. One simple change would do the trick. Universities have to co-sign for the loans. Now, you realize this will put about 30-50% of colleges out of business because there is actually a reasonable business plan to take in anybody for college, sign them up for a loan and then fail them after their freshman year. It's free money, although it would be kinder to simply tell these kids they should go to a trade school to learn auto mechanics, hair dressing, diesel repair or some other endeavor that will actually give them a decent living.

There's actually too many people going to college. If you're not going for a STEM degree, particularly computer science, software engineering, mechanical engineering, but instead are looking at library science, sociology or psychology, then look for something else. I've recently gone back for another M.S. in a new specialty and the professor said that new students are so fragile that if they don't get an A they whine and cry about it. These are not people who will be able to handle the inevitable setbacks in a career and will demand the government look after them.

@rtengstrom9620 There's a lot more to it than that though. When college was affordable, people either lived a off-campus apartment and took a bus to class or in tiny dorm rooms with a roommate, bad food, but you put up with it because you were there to study. Now colleges try to entertain student and spend way too much on recruiting, upgrading dorm rooms, and facilities. I went back to my alma mater and they have so much money that they're actually grooming the garden beds in the middle of a 10 below winter. It makes no sense. Get back to simple lecture halls, cheap dorm rooms, and focus on getting students graduated in 4 years or less if they're college material and if they're not, fail them quickly. We ate ramen and went to a grocery store that specialized in food that was past it's expiration date, and we didn't have money to go to bars on weekends. People need to lower their expectation of comfort for college.

@janus3555 And Biden has only been able to forgive about 2 to 2.3% (As of February of 2024) of current outstanding college debt Biden didn't "forgive" anything. He pushed the repayment onto the taxpayers; worse they're people earning much less than the people who got the free money. This kind of simplistic thinking is why we're $35T in debt.

@rabbiezekielgoldberg2497 Not so much. It's an agreement made between two adults. Nobody forces you. Now it is fair to say that the way they're sold to kids and their parents, they never explain that it will take the child their entire life to pay that loan back.

@rabbiezekielgoldberg2497 From the system of experience and how to deal with people who are mediocre but pretend to be something more.

@rabbiezekielgoldberg2497 People will know you by your works. If your works consist of demanding other people pay your way in life, people will draw the correct conclusion about you. Don't be that person.
