  1. The interesting aspect of the China ban on rare earth metals to the west is that that the Chinese have already caught up in terms of chip manufacturing to 7 nm. That means that they can now compete with all but the highest quality chips from TSMC. Longer term it means that ASML have now lost 40% of their sales that went to China, and now that China has their own photolithography machines that are now one seventh the price of ASML, they can destroy that company at their leisure when they export them to anyone who wants one. As to the very highest value chips even TSMC are struggling to implement 3nm and still haven’t 2nm. China has developed their own technology that is superior for the next generation of chips. The ban on rare earth metals will mean a two year delay to any war against China as they procure the metals from elsewhere. By which point China will be too strong to challenge.
