Before the Holden Ute, general motors Holden in Australia made Chevrolet utes beginning in 1935. Possibly Pontiac and Oldsmobile versions too. Mainly based on GM Canada parts. Some made it back to the US lately as per this Autoweek story https://www.autoweek.com/a2008626/1952-chevrolet-ute-gms-early-australian-import/ Well before the El Camino.

Australian made 1948 year model Chevrolet utes in right hand drive for Australia. Made by general motors Holden in their fishermen's bend factory since the mid thirties. https://youtu.be/QHp3uCxuIVc Well before the El Camino. Even before the local Holden cheaper smaller ute.

Was about to type that comment myself just minutes after you. Likely his farming background helped, but a mystery why it did not go ahead. Maybe did not want to cannibalise truck sales.

1956 Ford Mainline ute from Australia before the Ranchero. https://youtu.be/rJk7HZpBpu8 Rare to have them survive, being a workhorse.

From the thirties just about every volume selling car on the Australian market had a ute version. Even Armstrong Siddeley's and Triumph Mayflowers.

Another US limited volume Ute was the Mustang Ute : https://youtu.be/1l5LTnPHNXY There are Australians asking for a current model Mustang Ute now that you can't buy a Falcon Ute anymore. A Barra motor in it would be a bonus too : https://youtu.be/GHuPhsnwVV4
