There was one Edsel design that did continue well into the future. Not well known by the 1960 Mercury Comet was developed as the Edsel version of the compact Ford Falcon. Although no Edsel or even Mercury badging on the car. Too advanced in tooling to be thrown away when Edsel was closed down and did not look to much like an Edsel to generate a backlash. So Mercury got a compact car without much effort. Successful enough for Mercury to keep developing the nameplate and making it bigger and more powerful. Then even later that compact Edsel tooling was developed even further and modernised , dumping the fins, for the 1965 Australian XP model Ford Falcon. A make or break car for Ford Australia as the first two model Falcons sold in Australia gave Ford a bad name here. The Edsel based XP saved Ford , building on the improved XM, partly by a 70,000 mile highly publicised endurance test, showing the XP was a much more rugged car than the previous American based versions. Not too many know the highly regarded XP was in many ways the Edsel that saved Ford Australia from going under diwn under.
