Shane Warne was so highly regarded outside Australia that soon after condolences have been passed on from the UK from : Boris Johnson prime Minister Mick Jagger Ed Sheeran Elton John Some of the ones I have heard on the news so far as well as just about everyone in Australia. Highly regarded in India and Pakistan and every other cricket playing countries.

G'day Ian. At 5:40 the hole is the Ford Shaker Hood. Also used first in lots of US muscle cars. Air scoop mounted on the engine so moving with the engine. At 7:00 yes a Valiant Charger.
56
When the F1 championship started in 1950, the engine choices were 1.5 litre supercharged or 4.5 litre unsupercharged. The winning cars early on were Alfa Romeo with a 1.5 litre straight eight and Ferrari 1.5 litre V12. By the time the British Racing Motors ( BRM ) V16 got sorted out the formula changed to 2.5 litre without a supercharger. So the expensive development of the BRM engine was largely wasted. Later Cooper cars with Jack Brabham and Bruce McLaren driving showed the importance of good handling and low frontal area by moving to mid engined and less costly race cars. The even used an engine designed to power fire fighting water pumps by Coventry Climax. Enzo Ferrari hated that English cars practically made in garages , as he called it , could beat his racing factory cars.

Some US terms would not confuse us in Australia. Stroller often used for the smaller collapsible types of prams for instance.

On my driving test my tester and instructor talked about a recent test where the learner avoided a spare wheel coming out of a service station. The test stopped there and then with the learner passed. He had shown more awareness and road skills by avoiding that than any further testing could show. It seems to me you are in that category too.

One of the most memorable events in Bathurst history. Even my mother was cheering at the time. Bathurst converting my Mother to a once a year race fan like many in Australia. Peter Brock driving the legendary Holden LX Torana SS A9X Hatchback to first place ahead of another seven Toranas filling places one to eight. Last Bathurst for Torana with rule changes next year. The the Peter Williamson Toyota Celica next but a long way back. The heavy Falcon hardtops were even further behind as by this time they were outclassed the lighter Toranas as was the single Camaro that failed to finish. Alan Moffat Falcon failed to finish. Maybe karma from being helped in qualifying by some murky rule application to help him out. Torana was one of the few cars sold with four , six or eight cylinder engine options.

The guy stopping the interview was a beach inspector that had some powers but he liked having the power a lot.

When Conrod was all a straight I understand most cars needed to back off before the last bumps on the straight so as not to be launched into the air too much.
29
Out of the factory the best they got was 302 HP. Still amazing for a 265 cui six naturally aspirated. With the four speed gearbox they could out accelerate the competition over the quarter mile.
27
He had some bad advice in the comments here a while back. Maybe a butter salesman.
26
Bob's your uncle comes from Bob Menzies. Prime Minister of Australia from 1949 to 1965. If he was your uncle you could expect to be favoured.
24
Admire the honesty and scientific approach to this.

Safer to share all the Tim Tams with friends and neighbours than eat them hourly in your family.

The Goodwood events are great. Goodwood also provide a huge amount of coverage where they explain more about the cars running and the times they set against each other. Always learning something new from the coverage. Earliest this year may be the 1903 Mercedes race car being pushed hard. So near 120 years old. Duke of Richmond's driveway. Wikipedia has some of the amazing story of the Duke or Lord March.

At 8:16 is Albert Park Lake which is an easy walk from the centre of Melbourne. Also where the Australian Formula One Grand Prix had been held for about the last ,25 years. Daniel Riccardo taking us through a lap with the speeds reached and a track map: https://youtu.be/ujmwGDoarYg

All the racing Falcons built for the last forty years are four door cars. The other Shell DJR racing two door you have is the Australian racing version of the Mustang. Built to convert the racing Falcons to Mustang looking cars at minimum cost. This was since Ford here stopped making the Falcon but sold imported Mustangs. Controversial conversion that differed from a real Mustang for parity with the Holden Commodore as well as using the tube frame from the Falcon four door. No distortion in the road car Mustang you can buy from Australian Ford dealers at BMW type prices.

About 1999 NASCARs ran at Bathurst. They were 10kph or more faster on Conrod straight but 10, seconds a lap slower overall.
19
I think the engine sound at 11:15 is likely a two stroke motor that had several brands use them in older Eastern Europe.
18
Used to go to Altona beach. Amazed it got into any top beach list.

To get a feel for how big a shock the passing of Shane Warne is , search YouTube for his name in the past 24 hours or past hour. So many posts from around the world , not just Australia.

I remember the start of JB HiFi around 1974. My brother would help by making a bit of a trek to the single original store at Keilor East to buy bulk boxes of TDK Cassette tapes. Some for him and some for me. Now fifty years later most of my electronic stuff comes from one of their many stores in Melbourne.

Searching YouTube for Dick Johnson Sierra Will reward with lots of info and videos on the turbo era of Bathurst and how Dick developed the fastest Sierra in the world trying to keep up with the fastest Nissan Skyline R32s in the world. All locally developed to be better than overseas factory teams.

There was also rarely seen film of the track damage caused by one of the two "Record" setting runs of 1955. The force of the locomotive and train moving from side to side even on nominally straight tracks pushed the tracks out of straight alignment. It took something like a month to repair kilometres of the record track back to usable condition. A more recent TV documentary pointed out that the two competing locomotive companies did not exactly match each other with the top speed but it was just announced that way for both the CC and BB locomotive. There is more available film from a plane showing the overhead power supply catenary being melted and a shower of sparks trailing and then the locomotive coasting for many kilometres with pantographs down so as not to cause any further damage to the catenary. Lucky I saw the track damage film when I did because the poster said be quick as this suppressed film will not be allowed to be shown when the owners find out. Damages the 1955 legend as well as the track.

The 142 mph of the XY GT HO was not the big upheaval. The government purchase threats came in 1973 with news reports of the XA GT HO phase 4, Torana GTR xu2 V,8 and Charger 340 V8 four speed all being described as 160 mph off the Showroom floor. So much of a scare that all these race models did not happen and the race rules started being changed to allow more race modifications compared to showroom cars.

The car that lost the wheel at 4:17, AKU 991 is a 1935 Aston Martin Ulster. 1.5 litre sports car made before tractor manufacturer David Brown rescued the company after WW2. Where the DB models came from.
12
Lots right but Red car at 11:00 is a 1954 Kurtis Kraft Offenhauser Indy car. Did a good time for a two speed gearbox.
12
Another local alternative to Vegemite is Mighty Mite. I find it easier to spread and cheaper unit price but just as good. Mighty Mite was always Australian owned unlike Vegemite which until a few years ago was owned by Kraft. Might Mite also sponsors the Shell DJR V8 Supercar team as seen on their back wing.

Slammin Sam Kekovitchn ex VFL/AFL player then coach for North Melbourne. Later media football commentator. Went on to be used in ads for lamb around Australia Day. Many very popular version made and looked forward too each year. Lamb chops nearly as popular a steak in Australia but sausages are the BBQ staple. See also the democracy sausage and Bunnings sausage.

Your right. In racing you gotta do what you gotta do to keep going. Driver was mainly the late Peter Williamson. He was a great driver in a great car, with Celica beating most of the larger V8 car driver combinations. The next year he pioneered RaceCam for the world and provided commentary along with it. Something few drivers do around the world. In 1979 all the bigger name drivers , even Peter Brock, were too worried to have RaceCam in there car. Peter Williamson could see the benefit of RaceCam straight off.

Gday Ian. The De Tomaso with the 351 Cleveland at 3:20. Australian motor after about 1973 since the 351 Cleveland motors would have been sourced from Ford Australia from their Geelong engine plant. This was after Cleveland motor design US production ceased and the tooling was sent to Australia. The local Australian Cleveland was refined and made in both 351 and 302 versions. Available optionally in Falcon and Fairlane cars. Standard in the Falcon GT and was the motor used by the Mad Max car. De Tomaso were upset when Ford scrapped the tooling in 1983 without letting them know. So those later De Tomaso cars are a bit of an Australian muscle car.

Correction to Peter Brock mention around 10:30 . Was in Western Australia. The event where Peter Brock made his fatal error was Targa West. This other Targa was a Western Australia attempt at replicating the success of Targa Tasmania with a similar event but on worse roads. Although Targa Tasmania has had too many fatalities also.

Would have to be the most upmarket McDonalds store in Australia, yet the prices seems standard. Right in the middle of Sydney in an historic building so in keeping with the building. High pedestrian traffic there likely helps with the high rent. The common suburban McDonalds quite different but similar food range and prices, I expect. Not sure since not been for ten years or more.

Chrysler Valiant Charger. Just needed a four speed gearbox to beat the Holdens and Ford's in 1972. Hemi six with triple Weber carbs developed in Australia. The only Aussie two door that outsold the four door versions. Supporting the underdog.

Back sixty years ago in Australia a roast chicken was on the expensive side and served on special occasions like Christmas. Still common to have roast chicken at Christmas here. Even though heading towards peak summer heat. Turkey and duck much rarer, but a cooler seafood meal more common. Fried chicken from KFC for a few who can't cope with cooking and just buy takeaway all year anyway.

Ian, the change in currency to Australian dollars and cents was a big deal back then. Film on Australia preparing to change from pounds shillings and pence currency and why giving the example of how difficult currency arithmetic was with pounds shillings and pence or LSD as it was often abbreviated to. https://youtu.be/5ZTeWLA1LAs Even grade four schoolkids would have to learn that arithmetic before decimal currency. The song was heard so much and so catchy that Australians over a certain age can still sing the song or at least remember the change over date of the 14th of February 1966.

Ian. You mentioned Hugo Boss Cologne. Not everyone knows the amazing history of the first 4711 Cologne from over two hundred years ago and how it is named after its originating German city of Cologne or as it is spelt in Germany Koln : https://youtu.be/QBmcTvXUqFA From this I just learnt about the 4711 house number connection.

A switch is also better at quickly completing a circuit compared to the slower method of plugging in. So less damaging sparking of contacts.

G'day Ian. Bathurst 12 hour GT3 sports car race this weekend and today with the main race on Sunday. Unfortunately links to channels seem to be now stopped on your channel.

Hubnut drove his same Australian made car on both the steepest road in New Zealand and in Wales. It was an Australian made AU Falcon/Fairmont that he bought cheaply in New zealand to tour the country, but he liked it so much that he later imported it to the UK after a period of sellers regret : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hbj6bgYuBL4 Cost him a lot more to import the near 20 year old Fairmont than to buy it.

In Australia if you plug an active appliance into a powered socket you can often hear the crackle of the bad electrical contact being made. Not a desirable situation. Our usual power switch is designed to make this circuit contact very quickly to prevent sparking and heating of contacts. Assuming you have quality switches. Not always the case with some brands on the market.

The Queensland fix is a memorable bonus.
9
Lot of love for the Valiant Chargers here in Australia being the underdog car doing more with less. Some wins here but usually out gunned by Ford Falcon and Holden Torana. In New Zealand they dominated on there tracks and drivers. Won their biggest race for years in a row. Rare to find any hate for them here. A good one gets big money but not as much as the stratospheric amounts the top Falcons and Holden's go for.

Early 1938 film exists when it was an unsealed racetrack. Search YouTube for Bathurst 1938 Australian gp Grand prix cars of the time on dirt.

Eggs at 6:40. Here if you buy them at Coles they are at room temperature but at Woolworths they are in the chilled section. I go with the Woolworths chilled , and keep them in the fridge and wash them before cooking in my egg steamer to hard boil them. Also test that they don't float just before cooking.

G'day Ian. From 5:55. The Geelong Football club theme song will confirm you got it right in one attempt and help others, even in Australia, get it right : https://youtu.be/akAkWj7kXt0 My Aunt lived in Melbourne for the first twenty or more of her life. But after moving to Sydney she would get it wrong when ever I met her thirty or more years later.

Air jacks activated by the air spike guy with the air hose onto the left C pillar. Less NASCAR like over time, but started with fuel cans, lug nuts and trolley type jacks in the sixties.

It varies how the locals had treated the Magpies in the past. Aggression breeding aggression the likely cause. Fortunately the ones that lived in my area were very friendly and appreciated us digging weeds out of the garden. Magpies likely thinking, how good are these humans digging up grubs and worms and not eating any of them. These humans here just leave the grubs and worms for us in the soil they loosened up for us. Common in my whole suburb, never heard of an attack unlike my cousins distant suburb.

My then five year old nephew astounded everyone with how perfectly he could turn on a US accent when visiting there with his family. Disneyland , Grand Canyon etc. Mama can I have a drink of water, was the phrase he heard and asked his own Mum in perfect American for fun. Pleased with himself but easily went back to his normal Australian accent . So very receptive at that age.

Great series coverage. At 10:08 the blue car is the Australian built Chrysler Valiant Pacer. More detail on the Pacer story here ; https://youtu.be/dv-1x1sPiTk Always loved how well this underdog car went with its then 225 slant six. Great driver who prepared the car very well to beat so many V8 cars.

Known as the BOP motor as each of Buick, Oldsmobile and Pontiac had versions of the 215 cubic inch or 3.5 litre aluminium V8. The Oldsmobile version had an extra head stud to better cope with the turbo charging option they used in 1962. Shortly before the Corvair turbocharged air cooled flat six. All well before the turbo charged Porsche and Saab turbos that some claim to be the first turbo cars. In 1965 Jack Brabham and Repco in Australia saw the possibilities of the Oldsmobile block and created a three litre overhead cam version that won the 1966 F1 championship for the Repco Brabham car and was developed to win again in 1967 for both the drivers and manufacturers championship.
