You can see lots of similarity with the body panels of the XP Falcons used in the test but lots of improvements also made to the cheap surplus tooling with strengthening and better motors and gearing to make a now sought after classic Falcon. Back in the day my Father was most impressed by the improvement to the Falcon that this durability run and his friends owning one showed in the flesh.

  5. ​ @daveamies5031  some of the very high res you can get in negatives can be useful. Such as zooming in to a particular area of interest to see just that. Eg the Holtermann glass plate negatives from the 1870s where phenomenal detail of interest can be seen by zooming in. Thousands of them. Even used on the old ten dollar note. It seems the minimum size used was eight inch by ten inch glass plate negatives. Even damaged negatives like this can be useful. Just zoom in around the damaged parts. Every person I have shown them to has been amazed at the quality.

Since that time just over a hundred years ago there have been numerous votes to overturn the Hotel ban but each one has failed to get a majority vote and there are no hotels serving alcohol in these areas, But adjoining areas do.   7. You might try to vary this with less or more butter and more or less Vegemite until you find the optimal levels for you. I find a slice of cheese in a sandwich with Vegemite goes well too. A quick non junk food snack or even a lunch. A cheese and Vegemite Sanger ( sandwich ) being a school cut lunch staple in Australia for sixty years or more.   9. Gas in Australia for cars is Liquid Petroleum Gas or LPG. Got widely used for taxis and vehicles of high petrol consumption by converting to LPG. LPG having much less tax on it since a refining by product and also more abundant in our off shore oil wells. So popular that Ford made dedicated E has Falcons in the Barra era. Rapidly going out of use since newer cars not amenable to conversion and taxis going hybrid.

  15.  @edwardfletcher7790  I used to believe that widespread Torana claim until I found out about the Nova options , especially the slant four half a V8 motor. 12 Novas were sold by Holden in 1962 as GM expected them to replace the Holden. Other drivers lining up asking him how he did it after qualifying. Being a multiple Australian V8 Supercar champion helped him a lot.

Although little known fact is the XP in many ways is a US small Edsel that never made it into production as an Edsel but was sold as the first 1960 compact Mercury Comet although with no Mercury badging. Later Ford here used the old tooling and body strength with modifications for the XP. The XP was make or brake for Ford, so badly were the XK and XL received here. Minor local differences for the XR to XY, with more as they went on to the US models. Although so similar that there are a few XT GT cloned two doors around using a US body shell, just like Ford did with a circa 1968 show car that failed to generate enough interest for production here.

  24. Louvres are venetian blinds. A popular dealer accessory in the sixties to reduce heat and glare from the sun when air conditioning was usually an aftermarket super expensive alternative. Show cars with them now being period correct and owners collecting every dealer accessory they can. Even big money on eBay for the right tissue box to fit the optional holder.

  34. The upmarket Morris Mini Cooper S with a 1275 cc engine was the fast one. The winning year was 1966 when the Cooper S filled positions 1 to 9 beating the drum braked Valiant V8 as the next car outright. From 67 to 71 it was all Ford and Holden V8 models, although the Cooper S usually won the class for cheaper mid priced cars. Mini Minors were slow. In 1963 getting beaten by a VW Beetle looking like Herbie but number 54. Took the big upgrades to Cooper S spec to be fast and reliable.

  37. Both Valiants in the race had the 273 V8 first available as an option on top of the line Valiants. All the Studebakers had the 4.7 litre V8 which was the only motor in Australian sold Studebakers. All these cars had drum brakes only. Not enough people had bought the disc brake option in the Valiant to qualify for the race.

  43. Both Jack Brabham and Bruce McLaren likely got there car building and designing skills at the Cooper F1 team in 1959 to 60. The Cooper approach was to point a new driver at a set of tubing saying there is your car just build it. A great learning experience for Frank Gardiner as well. Might have flowed on to Dan Gurney when driving for Brabham cars too. Three drivers that drove F1 cars of their own company.

  49. Two HP is the road tax related calculation based on either piston area or engine size. The actual brake horsepower was much more for all except very early cars pre 1910 or so. UK and Australia used the RAC horsepower calculation, France likely something different. Almost forgotten about now but lasted into the seventies in Australia for road tax purposes.
