A VW Beetle 1200 in stock form won the Bathurst 500 in 1963, but only in class A for the least expensive cars. Beat the mini 850 in the class on the last corner of the last lap as the supposedly better handling Mini rolled. Was number 54 and looking like Herbie the Love Bug which was 53, yet several years before. Maybe Bathurst was the inspiration for Herbie.

My dad driving my mother's second hand 1956 oval rear window model with the roller accelerator pedal showed her it could get to 70 mph with the comment that you could drive all day like that. She was not too impressed though. Bit different to lots of English cars of the time which would start boiling or worse when driven near their top speeds.

The most remembered part of the 1963 Bathurst race. Neck and neck all day.
