Perhaps an even bigger reason was to access all those cheap Japanese right hand drive cars that become surplus to Japan after a few years due to very strict roadworthy requirements after even a few years. Aimed at keeping the local car makers and so the Japanese economy healthy. American Somoa would have seen nearby New Zealand doing that with Japanese imports

There is a marginal safety benefit to driving on the right. Studies have show a right handed bias to vision perception. Related to us mainly being right handed we notice things on our right quicker than the left. So when turning and incoming traffic decisions mainly occurs from the right humans on average react quicker. It is only a very marginal effect but still equates to thousand of potential lives saved per year in the road worldwide.

Ian, look at pictures of pre world war one and earlier US made cars at shows etc and you will find most are right hand drive, especially the earlier ones. A big change when Ford changed to left hand drive, then others followed in the US.
