@joandsarah77 yep. Common for these events to keep people away from the normal activities that benefit the economy. Resulting in a net negative unless you have a rare business that directly benefits. But those businesses have far too much influence on government.

Problem is that politicians and a high proportion of swinging voters like to imagine that there are notional financial benefits of Olympic Games that exceed the huge costs. Most countries, looking rigorously St the track record of previous Olympic Games, have given up wanting to fund them. An even worse case is the Commonwealth Games. Only the politicians running Victoria into the ground and their echo chamber want them.
