The F. W. Woolworth Company (often referred to as Woolworth's or Woolworth) was a retail company and one of the original pioneers of the five-and-dime store. It was among the most successful American and international five-and-dime businesses, setting trends and creating the modern retail model that stores follow worldwide today. But the name was not registered or trademarked in Australia and many other countries. So local unconnected businesses using the name and ideas were set up. Morphed later to concentrate on supermarkets. Safeway in Victoria may have had a similar idea but was taken over by Woolworths and renamed as late as the 2000s or so without asking customers what they thought. I still call it Safeway often. Coles also started with the five and dime idea but the sixties offshoot supermarkets soon dominated and Coles like to give everyone the idea that they have been grocery stores for over a hundred years.

There are the Federal Police but much lower profile. Airports seem to be their main patch.

In the sixties and seventies as well as Falcons and Holden's Kingswood rare cars used were Studebakers, Ramblers and later our Chrysler Valiant including the hi po Charger models. E49 I think or maybe 360 V8.

Police car racing at Bathurst but early sixties Studebaker. Studebakers of the later era sold surprisingly well in Australia assembled here from Canadian sourced parts and local content. More common here than Buicks, Oldsmobile, Cadillac, Lincoln, Mercury, Dodge and Plymouth. Similar with Ramblers being assembled here. Police thought highly of them. Some police racing enthusiasts bought them at police auctions to go racing at Bathurst. Story of the Australian Studebakers here : https://youtu.be/SHHTPLw-oNM Some of the police highway pursuit cars were two door cars. Standardised on V8s with highest trim level here to justify higher prices and simplify the range. I will try to track down vids of Victoria Police Studebaker cars used in the popular local Australian TV show Homicide.

@AustralianLightsAndSirens your channel would have to be close to the go to resource for the answers though. Gave Ian a few links to your site to give a definite picture.

And for the booming SUV market GM forced Holden to use the Daewoo Captiva called the Craptiva here for some reason. Mistakes piled on mistakes. Many more.

With the move away from Holden and Ford police cars I think it has been recorded that even police command are not happy with extra costs and problems arising from losing these always there taken for granted cars. Despite special deals police and government get. Some sad days reported when the last Falcons or Commodores are retired from police use but they get huge sums at police auctions. Report of one of the last : https://youtu.be/7JD4CiZFUqw

A sample of 1950s Police cars and Ambulances of the time and some of the cars on the road then : https://youtu.be/aPzeOpCzS1g Local Ford V8 preferred by Police then. The Holdens of the time were all 2.2 litre six cylinder cars with not much more than 60 HP. Early fifties local Ford Mainline ute doing work too. Well before the US Ford Ranchero.

Holden Colorado's not for much longer being out of production like all Holden's, even the badge job ones.

Yesterday was a significant anniversary. Four years since Holden ceased production in 2017. Also in the news today was the local Brimbank Police in Victoria taking their last Commodore SS V8 , called Quicksilver, out of service. Also discussed were another two called Big Red and the Cookie Monster having been taken out of service earlier due to unspecified damage. Often a tactic of suspects to allegedly ram Police cars so that the police will not pursue them with a damaged car. Very sympathetic judges here rarely apply the full extent of sentencing here when the usual advised excuses are rolled out if suspects get to court.

Victoria Police BMW 530D : https://youtu.be/FUIp9syqJDk From an unusual site attracted to the lights and sirens but a widespread coverage of short reality clips.

Ian , Ads for your supermarket interest. Safeway Victoria and Woolworths NSW with two versions until the Safeway name got squeezed out : https://youtu.be/_tMPhfmE5y8 And https://youtu.be/AmFTM9ddHXM For your supermarket interest. No one in Victoria wanted the change imposed. Lots still call it Safeway including me

@bushranger51 today is four years since Holden ceased production and also discussed on radio today was the Brimbank Victoria Police recording with regret that their last Commodore SS V8 called Quicksilver is now withdrawn from service ending an era for them. That also raised the topic of the Studebaker V8 as also used in the early Homicide episodes. Quite a few rang up who had bought one at the cop auctions like the Blues Brothers. Both Studebakers long ago and an SS just recently. Under the seats it was littered with breathalyzer straws. So a multi coincidence.
