If it's such a good thing then why would users be so against paying ten times the fare to pay for the costs of running and expending PT. PT promoters just freeloaders.

Melbourne public transport is hugely expensive. It is just that even the fare paying users only pay ten percent of the cost. You are into the taxpayer's pocket for the rest. Those taxpayers travel patterns being even less efficiently served by public transport.
