The 142 mph of the XY GT HO was not the big upheaval. The government purchase threats came in 1973 with news reports of the XA GT HO phase 4, Torana GTR xu2 V,8 and Charger 340 V8 four speed all being described as 160 mph off the Showroom floor. So much of a scare that all these race models did not happen and the race rules started being changed to allow more race modifications compared to showroom cars.

Moffat here no where near race speed. Just a filming run with a cameraman in the week prior to the race when the road was in public use. Hence the 1960 Holden's parked doing sight seeing. Still driving faster than anyone else would do.

@jimspink2922 I think that was NSW only. Never happened in Victoria. But it was the time when a huge number of safety measures we introduced. Victorian compulsory seat belt wearing the first in the world and most effective measure. Few would argue against now.

Just search YouTube for Bathurst 1971 Or any other year of interest back to 1938. Yep pre war on dirt.

@flamingfrancis yes there is a comment here about an 18 year old with an inheritance that allowed him to buy a phase 3 for $65,000 in the early nineties. Had it for three months, driving it like he was in a race, until he crashed it at 150 mph. Comment did not mention the casualties. Likely too horrific.

Moffat surprised everyone by going with a Mazda RX7 early eighties when the Falcons became un competitive in that era.

160 mph was the newspaper headline that stopped them.

@jimspink2922 yes still lots of variations state to state. Victoria licence still 18 and older. Seatbelts were in cars as standard earlier but Victoria was the first in the world to make the use of fitted seatbelts compulsory while traveling on all roads In 1970. Took other states longer, the even later for the rest of the world. I remember Peter Brock giving a talk at uni in 1973 emphasising the importance of seat belt law compliance as well as drink driving and other issues.

Not much race footage unfortunately. Too early for in car race cameras. This is pre race promotional film, hence early 1960 Holdens in the time parked. At 75 up and Heavy they were too slow to race even in 1960.

Lots of sponsors of the race over the years. Hardie Ferodo for a while in the booming interest years.

The Chrysler Charger is based on our Chrysler Valiant with a six cylinder 4.3 litre 265 cui near hemi motor. Triple Weber carbs etc eventually gave it 302 HP off the showroom floor. It would eventually out accelerate the top Falcon and Torana when it later got a four speed gearbox. Let down on the race by sticking with a three speed gearbox to be an all Australian car. Finished seventh in the rsce. The US Dodge Charger is a much larger heavier car. Not sold here. The Holden Torana was a six cylinder car that placed fourth behind three Falcons. Next year Peter Brock won in the wet with the Torana as pictured in the ending mosiac screen choice..

This in car movie camera film , with a cameraman, but at closer to road speeds was partly got Channel Seven network tech types thinking about developing RaceCam for a live to air feed. Happened Eight years later in the 1979 race.

Falcon GT HO phase 3 fastest four door sedan in the world at the time because in Australia we like to ignore cars like the rare Mercedes-Benz 300 SEL 6.3 AMG being five mph faster. 500 cc bigger motor and fuel injected overhead cam in 1971.

Last 500 mile race was 1972. Went to the longer 1000 km race in 1973 partly to give a full day racing as the 500 mile races were getting completed in too little time for fans and TV. As well as Australia moving to metric measures then.

@BentConrod just a messenger conveying what Moffatt thought and acted on. Might have also been before the dick Johnson unexpected success. Did Moffatt ever go with Falcon after the Mazda?

Brock and Moffat have driven in the Le Man's ,24 hour race. As did many of our V8 drivers. Larry Perkins was the most successful. Let Mans 66 co winner with Bruce McLarrn , Deny Hulme also drove at Bathurst. His last race due to heart attack. From NZ.

The 142 mph of the XY GT HO phase 3 caused some safety concerns from government. The 160 mph showroom cars planned to be built for 1973 was the big upheaval. The government purchase and legislation threats came in 1973 with news reports of the XA GT HO phase 4, Torana GTR xu2 V,8 and Charger 340 V8 four speed all being described in a front page newspaper report as 160 mph off the Showroom floor. So much of a scare that all these race models did not happen and the race rules started being changed to allow more race modifications compared to showroom cars. The start of non showroom cars in 1973 leading to today's plastic body tube frame cars.

The 500 started being over too quickly also.

Race went to 1000 km in 1973. Partly because the 500 races were getting over too quickly.
