At 5:24 that map is just reflecting the unexplored nature of Australia in 1793. Took another decade or two clear up the major mapping uncertainties. An 1840s heirloom map in my family had the Inland part of North western Victoria marked as Unknown.

Drawing pin widespread usage in Victoria. Might even have boxes labelled drawing pins. I think from holding paper for draftsmen or artists to draw on. Runners dominant usage in Victoria but used to be sand shoes. The WA pocket using runners might be Kalgoorlie reflecting lots of Victorians moved there chasing gold in the massive 1890s depression that had Victoria lose a lot of population.

G'day ian. At 4:42 is not where the Vegemite factory is. A fun fact is the Vegemite factory had most of its frontage on Salmon St Port Melbourne also was the address of the Holden head office and factory where the first 48-215 Holden was launched in 1948. GMH liked the unofficial name of Fisherman's Bend. Not sure if Holden's smelled slightly of Vegemite like the rest of Salmon St does. Also in Salmon st at the south end was the Rootes group factory assembling Hillman's and Humbers mostly. Later taken over by Chrysler in 1966 who had to be talked out of adding Chrysler to the Rootes Australia sign in the factory roof. Melway number one online in map 42 preserves this bit of history unlike most online mapping systems only interested in the current situation.

So which state are you in? Runners in Victoria or older generation said sand shoes. Not the American term sneakers.

The convict era was only a tiny part of Australian population growth. No convicts sent to South Australia and only a handful to Victoria for a few months unsuccessfully. Tasmania lots though initially. So even the cell block joke is wrong. Biggest boost to Australian population was after 1851 start of the gold rushes and the prosperity that bought. Melbourne for a decade or so the highest per capita income in the world from the flow on of gold.

Same answer for me as a Victorian although sneakers a sixties American TV term not widely used unless heavily US influenced.

No lasting convict settlement in Victoria.
