When the F1 championship started in 1950, the engine choices were 1.5 litre supercharged or 4.5 litre unsupercharged. The winning cars early on were Alfa Romeo with a 1.5 litre straight eight and Ferrari 1.5 litre V12. By the time the British Racing Motors ( BRM ) V16 got sorted out the formula changed to 2.5 litre without a supercharger. So the expensive development of the BRM engine was largely wasted. Later Cooper cars with Jack Brabham and Bruce McLaren driving showed the importance of good handling and low frontal area by moving to mid engined and less costly race cars. The even used an engine designed to power fire fighting water pumps by Coventry Climax. Enzo Ferrari hated that English cars practically made in garages , as he called it , could beat his racing factory cars.

Add to the list Mercedes Benz in the fifties and arguably the current Mercedes Benz cars. Swamps BRM if you count the recent ones.
