  1. The fuel taxes are so high in Australia to fund the level of public transport we have. In Victoria fare revenue from public transport only covers about 20% of the operating costs let alone the capital costs of new expansion running into hundreds of billions for proposed new underground lines. Really only serves a small proportion of travel. This being CBD work travel in the main. Even though this is declining as business gets out of high cost CBD locations. Voters like to vote for free lunch projects and pork barreling and wonder why taxes are high.
